Not for you!
I finally got my McRib and Kumquat tried to steal it!
I finally got my McRib and Kumquat tried to steal it!
Today I had the day off to take Kumquat to the doctor. Since the appointment wasn’t until 2pm, we had lots of time to play. In the morning, we went to visit Ranee and Sophie at their new home in Walnut Creek. They have so much space now! Ranee made us breakfast and the babies played on the floor together. Kumquat really liked Sophie’s blocks.
For lunch, I actually went to work. KM makes a sushi lunch for us every year and I wasn’t about to miss it. So, I brought Kumquat with me and Ranee brought Sophie too. We all gathered around the mat and watched the babies play.
We always think it’s fun to watch normal babies move and play. The food was delicious (as usual) and I got to see Elaine too!
Kumquat and I had to go to see the doctor without Jes today too. Luckily she was on her best behavior. I was even able to leave her with the front office staff while I used to restroom. That’s by girl!
On MLK Monday, we made a last-minute day trip to Napa with Jason and Jia.
It was Jia’s first trip and this was the perfect day to go since Mirian was already scheduled to come it to watch Kumquat. So, when Mirian arrived at 9, we took off! We arrived at Paraduxx for our first tasting at 10:30 am. Seemed silly to be drinking wine so early but they again, why not?! It was nice and quiet out on the patio and we tasted a bunch of Zin blends with some tasty cheddar.
Our next stop was Robert Craig, which is where we are wine members. We all got a free tasting and got some extra pours from our lovely hostess Tia, who really loves her job.
She gave us a nice lesson on the different soil in the area and we had a fun time just chatting-it-up with her.
At Morimoto, we sat down to quite a feast. In the front, there was a display of really pretty treats made by a little Japanese lady in the front.
The wine finally caught up to Jia and she struggled to stay awake for the first half of the meal. It was pretty funny. She couldn’t stop smiling and at one point, Jason told her to put her sunglasses on while she got a little shut-eye at the table. I missed that photo op.
Now, to the food! We started with two of our faves from last time, the tuna tartare and crudite with anchovy oil.
Then came the ahi pizza, which sounds gross but it was recommended by Tia and it was delicious! Basically, it’s raw ahi on top of a crisp wafer layered with jalapeno, tomato, and a creamy aioli. Initially, it’s just tuna that you taste but then all of a sudden the flavor changes into pepperoni pizza! Amazing. I think it’s the combination of all the flavors together that does it. We were skeptical when Tia described it to us but it she was totally right. Serves us right to doubt someone who makes a living off her sense of taste and smell.
Next up was the 10-hour pork belly over congee. It was really scrumptious with the sweet and savory mixing together in one bite.
Next was the Mori-cristo. It came from the late-night menu, which they now serve for lunch and was recommended by our server at the restaurant. It did not disappoint.
It’s an ahi sammich that’s fried and topped with an egg. There’s a tasty aioli that they spread inside that brings it all together. Morimoto is a genius.
I think my all-time favorite of the day was the uni carbonara. It’s a Japanese twist on an Italian classic and I was so happy. It was creamy, sweet, salty, and super rich. The sauce had the flavor of uni and there was a nice piece on top for texture. This was a tiny dish that all four of us shared but rich enough that we were all satisfied. I wanted to lick the plate clean.
After lunch, we headed home and were back by 4:30! Mirian got off early, Kumquat had a fun day at the park, and Mommy had a fun time in wine country. It was a good day for everyone!
I was up early this morning while the baby and husband were asleep. Koa and I took a long walk outside and watched the sun come up. Lately my walks with Koa have been rushed and chaotic because I’m either late for work or trying to manage him on a leash while pushing a stroller. It was beautiful outside today. I forgot how nice it can be out there. I think Koa had a good time too.
After our walk, I decided to make breakfast and found a recipe for a Spinach and Bacon Quiche. Since I had to buy who pie crusts, I decided to double the recipe and make two. They keep well so why not? Here are the ingredients laid out before pouring the egg and cream mixture in.
Here’s the final product. Voila! We have a quiche!
As you all know, one of my favorite things to do is go to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings. It used to be a something that I enjoyed by myself but it seems even more fun with Kumquat now. I picked up a morning bun from the Downtown Bakery stand and a cup of coffee from Peet’s and then we sat down by the water to have breakfast together.
This morning was especially cool because I actually got the courage to say “hello” to Chef Cosentino, who I’ve seen there severally times buying produce for his restaurant. I asked if he would take a photo with the Kumquat and he was so nice to humor me. I love the Jesse scowl that she gave him.
On Sunday, Jes was sick as a dog so it was a good thing I had some stuff planned that day. In the morning, I packed up Kumquat and her stuff and headed out to Lafayette for brunch with Ranee and Steph. Stephanie just announced to all of us (on NYE) that she’s expecting a baby in June! Woohoo! I couldn’t be happier for her and Nathan. Ranee has been just as excited so we planned this brunch to get caught up and hang out.
It was freezing cold – I mean literally 32 degrees there that morning and little Sophie had to wear her beanie in the restaurant. So cute! There was also an extra spot at the table for Steph’s baby so we’ll have to plan another brunch a year from this day. He/she should be ready to sit in a highchair and grub with the rest of us!
Afterward, I met up with Michelle in Walnut Creek. I had some errands to run there so it was a good place to meet up. I hadn’t seen her since she and the family moved to Orinda. Here we are at Peet’s Coffee waiting for Michelle. I was so excited to see her that I forgot to take a photo. We had lunch in a little diner and I had a surprisingly tasty cup of posole there!
Once lunch was over, Kumquat had fallen asleep in the stroller. Instead of waking her, I decided to let her take her full 2-hour nap and I got to do some shopping! Broadway Plaza has lots of good shops and I got an awesome parking space on the street. It was perfect. I picked up a new jacket for myself and some ridiculously cheap clothes for Kumquat at Gap.
Check out that price! That cute purple shirt was $5.97 plus an additional 40% off!
What a good Sunday. I got some girl time and alone time, Kumquat got a really good nap, and Jes got some rest too that day.
