Eight Months of SIP

It’s November 13, 2020 and Election Day happened last week. Interestingly, we still don’t know who will be our president. Biden/Harris look like they’re in the lead but Trump/Pence are hanging on and fighting back. This year really is a mess and isn’t getting better.

Halloween was in SoCal for Alice’s Birthday. We went to Jia and Jason’s house to do a distanced scavenger hunt around their neighborhood. The kids still managed to come home with buckets of candy.

Right after, we all got into our Honda Odysseys and drove down to Carlsbad. We stayed in a hotel across from the beach, which provided a free shuttle ride to the beach along with umbrellas and chairs. The kids had a blast and the grown ups were able to sit and relax. The hotel was pretty quiet and the kids also ended up with the pool to themselves.

I guess we are all adapting to life with all the circumstances around us and the kids are resilient.

Four Months of SIP

It’s July 14, 2020 and we just finished our 4th month of SIP.

The kids and Jes are still in SoCal and it’s been good for everyone. The kids are enjoying the extra company and I think Jes and my brother are relieved to have a little extra help in planning/cooking/sharing meals.

I got to fly down for the long July 4th weekend. It was fun to play with fireworks on the driveway like we used to as kids. Jason and Jia’s neighbors were really into it too so there was plenty of entertainment that evening.

Here’s the airport and what the plane looks like when I fly. There are usually only about 50-something passengers and we are all spread out.

Here is my usual garb at work now. It’s standard to everyone to be walking around with a surgical mask and face shield.

If I’m doing a procedure in Radiology, I have to up my game and wear an N95 mask, faceshield, gown, gloves, AND the lead apron. Fun times.

KP also sent us all masks and a red sticker that we are supposed to put on our badges in case we are called to work during a lockdown of the city. Hopefully things will not come to that but it was a nice gesture.

All the elevators have stickers on the floor to cue people to keep their distance and limit the number of people inside to no more than 3 at a time.

What’s nice is that I still have one of my very good friends by my side in all this. Teresa still works with me and we are going through another crazy disease together.

We have been through scabies, H1N1 (photo above from 2009), Zika, and now SARS-COV-2.  It’s been good to have someone to hang out with now that I am home alone without the family. Gets kinda lonely after a while.

What’s been helpful in passing the time is playing Animal Crossing New Horizons. It’s fun to just hang out on an island building stuff, catching fish, growing flowers, and making friends with villagers.

On the to the next month!

My 44th Birthday

My birthday celebration started early the week before when Ranee invited us to the winery at Jack London Square last Friday evening. It was a gorgeous evening with lots of sparkling wine to sip and taste.

Ranee also got us a bottle of sparkling rose to share. The kids played on the lawn all evening and we got to sit and unwind.

If that wasn’t fun enough already, we got to hang out AGAIN the following night!

We dropped the kids off at Jimmy and Eleen’s house (thanks guys!) and took an Uber to the city. We had tickets to see JANET!!!

We had purchased these tickets months ago and the Chase Center just opened a few weeks ago.

It was so nice to see Ishya smiling after the passing of her mom (my aunt).

Janet was awesome and sang what seemed like ALL HER SONGS.

The Chase Center was on their feet and he had such a good time.

The following week, we flew down to Cerritos to celebrate the actual birthday with Brother who turned 40!!

We had a family dinner at Lawry’s and then went out for dessert at David Chang’s milk bar.

The following night, we went to see Ali Wong at The Wiltern.

Interestingly, she had a strict no-device rule. We had to go through security at the entrance and lock our phones and smart watches in a bag that we carry around with us but can’t unlock until the show is done. It was a fun experiment and reminder of how things used to be when we were younger and didn’t have cell phones.

Ali was really funny and so was the guy that opened for her! Good show.

My last bit of birthday fun was the day after when we arrived back in Alameda. Just the 4 of us went out for Korean BBQ and stuffed ourselves silly.

Jes’ 44th Birthday

Yesterday, we celebrated Jes’ birthday on his actual birthday. We took the day off work, sent the kids to school, and then went to Napa for lunch at Bouchon.

We started the meal with the salade lyonnaise and salmon rillettes.

Jes ordered the steak frites and I got a giant bowl of mussels in a garlic butter broth.

For dessert, they gave him a little package of their chocolate bouchons. So cute!

A trip to Bouchon would not be complete without stopping at their bakery next door. I wanted to get all the things but ended up with just a few goodies to share with kids later that evening.

Peanut made Jes a card complete with balloons, fish stickers, and his own writing. He chose to sign it “Peanut”.

The kids sang “Happy Birthday” and helped him blow out the candles on his lemon tart and chocolate eclair.

The next day, we had dinner at Ian’s house. He invited us over for some wagyu beef that he bought for Jesse.

What had also been planned was a surprise visit by all the guys at the end of the night.

They arrived with cakes and whiskey.

We were all in on it and he was indeed surprised. That was very cool of them to do that for him.

15th Anniversary

Jes and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary (11/5-11/9/17) in Kauai without the kids. My parents came up to watch them for the week and we were able to get some rest and just hang out together like we used to.

IMG_9306

We booked our flight through United with miles and although it wasn’t Hawaiian, it got us there in once piece and we were able to upgrade to Economy Plus. I had some sparkling wine and watched TWO full-length movies!!! I watched the live action version of Beauty and the Beast and then Cars 3. It was so different sitting on a plane without having to get up out of my seat every 15 minutes.

IMG_9337

Our first stop after picking up the rental car was Costco. We picked up a giant bottle of mai tai and I also found these honey furikake puffs that are so tasty. I wanted to pick up a few extra bottles of Koloa Rum but knew that we wouldn’t be able to carry them onto the plane.

IMG_9335

We later checked in to Sheraton Kauai and then went to the beach bar for a drink and snack.  Ah…mai tai…

IMG_9363

This trip also felt like a “run-cation”. I ran 3 days in a row and two of them were with Jes! So fun!

IMG_9364

We were up early and I got this photo of the surf with the moon still awake.

IMG_9515

Loved running along the water and this awesome side street with a gorgeous view of the mountains and fields.

One of the places we had to visit was Princeville. It’s now called the St. Regis Hotel but it’s where we stayed for our honeymoon.  We had brunch at the restaurant that has a gorgeous view of Hanalei Bay.

We also recreated a photo we took 15 years ago.

Kauai

IMG_9469

On one morning, we visited the Koloa Rum Tasting Room. It’s a free tasting and featured their dark rum, spiced rum, coconut rum, and coffee rum.

IMG_9464

Their gift shop was chockful of cool stuff including these giant flasks!

IMG_9459

We had some tasty food while we were there. One of our breakfasts was at Tip Top Motel and Cafe. The loco moco was delicious.

IMG_9479

We also found Koloa Fish Market and picked up a plate lunch and some poke.

IMG_9480

IMG_9549

On our last night, we had a reservation with Kauai Ono, which is a catering chef that has one seating per night under a tent at Princeville Ranch. All the ingredients are local and the communal tables create a fun place to meet new people.

IMG_9557

We sat across from a couple from San Rafael that was in Kauai to celebrate their 52nd wedding anniversary. We had a fun conversation as the chef served us 5 courses.

IMG_9555

We had seared beef heart over mashed breadfruit, a cucumber salad, seared marlin over a kale salad, brisket cooked with lemongrass and paired with Japanese purple sweet potato.

IMG_9558

Dessert was a mochi churro with chocolate coconut dipping sauce. Tasty.

IMG_9542

On our last day, we spent about 6 hours in a cabana that we rented for the day. It was right on the beach and had the perfect amount of shade and breeze to keep us comfy with easy access to the ocean and pool.

IMG_9520

I read, took a nap, played in the ocean, and spent some quality time with the husband.

IMG_9522

IMG_9530

Oh and did I mention there was food and drink service?! We simply put up a flag and someone would come by to take our order. So nice.

IMG_9415

The Sheraton had an awesome location with direct access to the beach and some gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. IMG_9431

IMG_9428

IMG_9435

Our hotel room had a garden view but you could actually see the ocean from the lanai. Not bad for a discounted $189/night rate.

IMG_9450

IMG_9570

On the morning of our return flight, we went back to the beach one more time and found a monk seal napping on the beach too.

IMG_9569

IMG_9579

Our flight was delayed 2 hours but we had plenty of bar time at the airport to chill out. It was also much easier to tolerate the delay without the kids in town.

IMG_9580

Luckily, we finally got on the plane and it was a 4.5-hour flight. We had a great time together in Kauai and 4  days away was a good amount of time for us to regroup, get some rest, and miss the kids.  Good times…

42

IMG_8213
I turned 42 on Thursday and it was a nice coincidence that it landed on my usual day off of the week. Jesse took the day off too. The day started with breakfast at a cafe in Emeryville followed by some browsing and shopping for kitchen countertops, applicances, and cabinets. We are planning to remodel the kitchen soon and needed to get some stuff picked out. For lunch, we went to Trabocco and shared a burrata platter and prosecco. After the main entrees, we ordered a small affogatto and the owner/chef came out with a special “Happy Birthday” platter and sang to me.

IMG_8214
That was very sweet in so many ways.

On Friday evening, the family sang to me and helped me blow out candles.
