Weekend in SoCal – Part 1

This past weekend was our first trip home with Kumquat.  The drive down started out smoothly with Dog in the front seat and Kumquat in the back with me.  Unfortunately we hit construction traffic in Buttonwillow and then super traffic starting in Burbank.  Our trip ended up taking 10.5 hours that day!  Ouch.  Thankfully, Kumquat was on her best behavior and was an eating and sleeping machine.

As soon as we got to Cerritos, we dropped of Kumquat and Koa and got some tasty Mexican food and margaritas at Don Jose.  That really hit the spot.

On Saturday, it was filled with family festivities.  For lunch, we had dim sum at Capital Seafood in Irvine.  Kumquat was the star of the show and got to wear her purple dress again.

While we waited for our tables, we went next door to 85 degrees bakery to try their famous iced salted coffee and it was pretty good!  There was a good turnout and we took up two huge tables in the middle of the restaurant.

For dinner, we had a Thai feast with the cousins at Thai Nakorn as we always do when we’re in town.

Marie and the gang got to meet Kumquat for the first time and so did Pish and his clan.

We all stuffed ourselves silly and even got to snack on Peking Duck-flavored Lays potato chips.

Later that evening, we stopped at Ti and Thilan’s house to visit our “third family”, The Tranandos.  They were having a party for Elise’s birthday and they invited us over to join them.  All the kids got to meet Kumquat and Makenzie still remembered her friend Jesse.  It was so cute when they all swarmed the baby.

I also forgot how fun it is the sing the second verse of the “Happy Birthday” song.

Secret Service

Walking Koa with Kumquat in tow feels like I have Secret Service with me.  Dog is always on high alert and checks back on us every few seconds.  Pretty funny.

When we’re at home, Koa checks on Kumquat in her bed when she cries.  He also becomes extra protective when an unfamiliar person comes over and holds her.  He’ll come by and sniff the baby and the person, sit at the person’s feet, and give a deadly stare.  He’s even been bold enough to jump onto the couch to sit right next to the person holding Kumquat.

A Day of Firsts

Yesterday was a day of firsts.  In the morning, Brother, Joy, and my dad arrived from LA and Kumquat met her uncle and auntie for the first time.

Once she was fed and changed, we took a walk to the Ferry Plaza for lunch.  That meant leaving Kumquat with Jes by himself for about 2 hours.  This was the first time I had left her for a good chunk of time and it was Jes’ first time with her alone for that long too.  I had just enough time to order, eat my lunch, and grab a couple treats before getting a text from Jes: “Where da boob at?” and a photo of Kumquat with a red face.  I hurried home and as I was waiting to cross the street from the Muni platform to my house, I got a second text: “Better double time.” with a photo of her crying.  By the time I walked through the door, she had cried herself to sleep.

In the afternoon, my mom and dad went to dinner with Brother and Joy and it was time for me to try walking the dog with the baby in the stroller at the same time all by myself.  Luckily, the baseball crowd had thinned and Koa was well-behaved.  Phew, it looks like this will be doable after all.

For dinner, Jes and I left the baby with my mom and dad as soon as I fed her.  We went to Hillstone (formerly Houston’s) and I finally got to order my favorite salad: seared ahi tuna with greens, mango, and avocado.  I was so happy to have raw tuna again.  I also got a few bites of Jes rib-eye that was cooked to Medium Rare.  Mmmmm…it’s been so long.  It was particularly good with a few sips of his red wine too.  Oh how I’ve missed you, red wine!  We also had enough time for dessert…key lime pie.  🙂  When we got home, over 2 hours had passed and Kumquat was still sleeping!  Good baby!

Happy Birthday, Koa!!!

June 2004

My dear old doggie turned 8 years old (56 dog years!) today.  He’s slowed down a bit and he’s definitely calmer now but overall he’s the same puppy that we picked up from a little ranch in Arroyo Grande eight years ago.

This morning I was up early and so was he so we took a long walk and he got to run off-leash.  I haven’t been able to walk him as frequently as I used to with my ever-growing belly this past month and now with the baby to take care of so this was a treat for me too.

It was a gorgeous morning and it was nice a quiet.  I love walking him before 7 am.  It’s like we have the whole city to ourselves.

Happy 8th Birthday, Dog!  Love you!

Clean and Fuzzy

This afternoon my mom and I walked Koa to the bathhouse down the street and gave him a deadly bath.  He hadn’t had a bath since his 3 weeks in Cerritos back in February so it was about time.  It was also probably a good idea to have him clean for the arrival of our newest family member.  He hated it as usual but it was much easier for me with an extra set of hands.  As a reward, he got a tasty treat that he carried home in his mouth and devoured when he got home.   Now he’s all clean and fuzzy for Kumquat.

The Chair

Hello.  Still here!  No baby yet.  Today is our earliest due date 4/15 and nothing’s happened yet.  There was some confusion for our due date based on our first ultrasound and date of conception so we have two.  The second due date is 4/17 and that’s been the one that my doctor is currently going by.  I guess it’s fine since I’m still sitting here in my livingroom on 4/15 watching TV without even a hint of going into labor.  *sigh*  Oh well, I guess it just extends my “Return to Work” date.  Heh heh.  Don’t forget to put in your due date guess here.  🙂

Today Ryan also dropped off their awesome glider chair.  We are the 3rd family to receive it and it’s greatly appreciated.  Dog’s reaction to Mr. Chair was a little odd.  He sniffed and inspected and stared at the chair for a good half-hour.  He probably smelled a combination of Jack, Reese, and Cat-Cat.  He kept staring at it and looking back at me like something was supposed to happen or appear.  He also poked the seat with his nose and made it glide back and forth, which sort of worried him.  What a funny dog.
