Rest in Peace, PoPo.
Today is a very sad day for us. We lost PoPo this morning and her family was able to be at her bedside to say goodbye. This photo was taken back in 2007 on Christmas Day.
PoPo was very special to Jesse since she was very involved in his care when he was a baby. I met her a very long time ago at a family function back in 1995 when she was still living by herself and was a fantastic cook. Little by little her health declined until the family had to move her to a place where she could be taken care of 24 hours per day. At that point, she was still rather independent and going to church down the street. Around that time, she still recognized her family and I remember one wedding that we went to in 2005 where we had our last real interaction with her. Here is the post. I’m so thankful that I wrote about it because I wouldn’t have remembered every detail.
Eventually, she needed a higher level of care so she moved to a different place. Here was the one and only time all four generations were together. It was in 2012 around Christmas again. It was the last time Jes and I saw her.
Hannah, Jesse’s cousin, said it perfectly when she posted this on FB today:

We also stopped for breakfast and a little street music.
Later that day, we jumped on Caltrain and sat on the floor in the bike car like peasants. Actually, we felt more like cattle. Heh heh.
We had dinner at Blue Line Pizza and ordered a thin crust AND deep dish pizza for the 5 of us. I liked the deep dish one better than the thin but they were both pretty good. Unfortunately, our table was a bit crowded and I ended up knocking over (AND BREAKING) a wine glass by the end of the meal. Doh!
Our ride home was a lot more comfortable and I was surprised to look down and find the little one asleep next to me. Maybe there’s hope for our 6-hour flight to Hawaii in a couple weeks.
Sunday was more laid back. We were home in our pjs for most of the morning. We did make it outside at least once and I’m glad we did. It was so sunny and warm! Who says SF has terrible weather?!
We had to do our taxes in Cerritos this year so it was a good excuse to go home for the weekend. The drive down on Friday wasn’t too bad (8am-3pm) with two stops.
When we arrived, Alice was there and it was fun to see Kumquat playing with her.
She also enjoyed having tea in the backyard like a regular suburban kid. My mom also had dinner prepared (of course, it’s the Magical House!) so we enjoyed some Chicken Rice and soup.
On Saturday morning, Brother and Joy came over.
After breakfast, we packed up the kids and headed out to Huntington Beach. As soon as we got out of the car, Kumquat cried and was in panic mode for the first 20 minutes.
It was nice just being out there on the sand and enjoying the sunshine and view. It’s funny how neither of the kids were very happy in this picture.
For lunch, I planned a big family gathering to catch up and to also celebrate Kumquat’s 2nd birthday. My mom picked up an ice cream cake and we ordered all our favorite dishes. This picture that Brother took cracks me up.
It was also so nice to see the cousins again.
Later that afternoon, Holly and Andrew came over. Andrew as a little quieter than usual but it was nice to do some catching up.
Our tax appointment was at 6:30 so Jes and I left and it took the usual hour and a half to get it all done. There was a bit of a wait so we went to Starbucks to pick up coffee and went back to finish the paperwork when the office assistant called. Afterward, we had a nice Japanese dinner without the kid. It’s so rare that we get a date night. It’s funny (and a little sad) that tax night became date night.
On Sunday morning, we left relatively early and the drive back was easy (9am-4pm) with three stops. I hate these super short trips to LA but always glad that we did it. I miss my family.
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade also rolled down Market Street and there were a bunch of people dressed in green and ready to party.
After Kumquat’s nap in the afternoon, we went back outside and had a few drinks at Hi-Dive. We were all in shorts that day!
On Sunday, I went out for a run in the morning and ran past the burned down construction site that made the news last week. It’s crazy how close it was to home.
Later in the morning, we went to the California Academy of Sciences. Then we took a long lunch at Pacific Catch where the rolls and poke were pretty ono. I can’t wait for our trip to Hawaii next month!
