over the top

At work, we choose names out of a bag each year and provide a special birthday treat for the person we pulled.  With my birthday coming up, I knew something was coming but didn’t expect it to happen so early.  This morning during our weekly staff meeting our Department Administrator poked her head in the room and announced that there would be a birthday treat for me at lunch.  Oh boy…it was quite a treat indeed.

There were banners all over my desk, I was greeted with a lei and tiara, and I got an ice cream cake!!  They sang “Happy Birthday” for me with party blowers galore.  It was a nice gesture but pretty embarrassing too.  All I can say is that it was definitely memorable.

She still isn’t 30.

God help me. Our precious Vyl turned only 29 on Tuesday. Ryan said a while ago that he’ll have to kill himself when she turns 30 so I guess he still has one more year to live. We celebrated on Tuesday night with some Italian food and wine. The birthday girl also received 3 bouquets of flowers that night. Aw…

Here are the photos.

Birthday Boy

It’s Jesse’s birthday today and he’s a whoppin’ 33 years old today!

In his 33 years of life, he has managed to do a few things with himself…

  • learned to play the recorder, piano, and guitar
  • taught himself how to cook and has become quite the home chef
  • completed a triathlon and century
  • bought two homes
  • got to Level 70 in WoW
  • married me

He’s already had an omelet breakfast prepared by yours truly and we’re going to Michael Mina tonight for dinner. I wish I could buy him a sailboat for his birthday but we’z po’.  Maybe next year.

UPDATE:

Here’s a photo of Jes and his birthday dessert.  It’s called Seasonal Berries Three Ways.  Dinner was yummy and we all went home with full bellies.

Food with Friends

On Labor Day, we had an impromptu BBQ.  Dayantha and Krissy were in town for a family event and came over on Monday to hang out and sleep over.  We prepared some of Susie’s mom’s spicy pork and bulgogi along with some chili lime wings that Jes prepared.  We grilled on the fourth floor and used the common area to enjoy our meal and watch the Bruins win their season opener in overtime.

Later, we brought everyone back up to the condo so that Koa could show off his toys to Kona and Smush.

Happy Birthday Daddy!

This is my Daddy back in 1970.  He looked like one cool dude.  As he turns 64, he’s still one cool dude.  He’s got his own website, has a busier social life than me at 32, and can still imitate Elvis’ hip-shakin’ moves like a teenager.  Happy Birthday, Daddy!  I wish I was there to give you a big birthday hug.

Colored Fog

After a relaxing day at home, we decided to walk to Fisherman’s Wharf for some July 4th fireworks. Everyone knew there was fog but everyone was still hopeful that it would miraculously clear up for the fireworks. That included me, of course. We walked amongst the diverse citizens of SF, which included families, young couples, elderly groups in wheelchairs, teenagers, and your garden variety thugs.  As we walked along The Embarcadero, there was a particular orange “party car” that had the music blasting and was packed with people bouncing along to the beat. I had the impression that they were on their way to the pier with the rest of us but it turned out they were just cruisin’.

As for the fireworks, they weren’t very visible. In fact, it was like a light show of colored fog and loud booms. I suppose SF wouldn’t be SF if it were done any other way. So, we headed home a little early and got quite a show from all the illegal fireworks all around us. Despite the poor visibility, I still managed to have a good time and Jes got a nice 3-mile walk.
