Oahu: Day 3

Day Three: Friday 4/25/14

IMG_2906On this day, we were up early again but sorta slept in until 6.  I guess Kumquat was getting adjusting one hour per day.  Once again, we had breakfast by the pool and it was looking a little cloudy.  We were supposed to go to Yoon and Kurt’s BBQ today with a forecast of 40% rain.  Yikes.  This is one of my favorite photos from the trip.

IMG_2913We took a little walk by the pool and then said “hello” to Mr. Ocean again.  Still scared.

IMG_2899Once Jes was up, we walked to McDonald’s for the Spam and Eggs Platter.

IMG_2910Afterward, we went back to the hotel and just hung out on the couches at Rum Fire.  This had become our spot for reading, relaxing, and hanging out in the shade.

When it was time for the BBQ, we packed up our things and walked to Ala Moana Beach Park.  People thought we were crazy for walking but it was only a little over a mile away from the hotel.  This was the perfect opportunity for Kumquat to get in a quick snooze before the festivities.  IMG_2945Once we arrived, Yoon had a full-on spread under the large tree complete with BBQ’d meat, mac salad, chili from Zippy’s, noodles, and pretty much everything else we were craving.

IMG_2961

It did sprinkle at times but that tree was the perfect protection and it was actually kinda nice to have the rain every once in a while.

IMG_2963

She laid out a bunch of towels and bed sheets for everyone to sit and eat.  The kids all got a shovel and pail set along with blow-up animals.  They had so much fun together.

IMG_2946The beach was a nice lagoon with gentle waters.  It was perfect for Kumquat and was her first introduction to how fun the beach and water can really be.

IMG_2974By the end of the afternoon, she had soaked through her non-swim diaper (I didn’t think she’d actually go in) and couldn’t get enough of the wet sand.

IMG_2988

IMG_3006After the BBQ, everyone headed back to the hotel to wash up.  Yoon had planned Round 2 at Uncle Bo’s and had a reservation for 25 people to show up at 7:00.  We were all late and some people arrived before they gave the tables away.  We had a ton of food and plenty to drink.

IMG_3010It was so nice to have everyone together again after so many years.  Lots of people arrived this afternoon and half didn’t make it to the BBQ so this was a lot of fun.

IMG_3012The happy couple received some “special” shots that evening and we all got a good laugh.

IMG_3028After dinner, a bunch of us went singing at a place Dayantha and the guys found the other night.  IMG_3029Kumquat rode in the minivan taxi with everyone and also joined them in the singing room for the first half hour.  What a trooper.

Oahu: Day 2

Day Two: Thursday 4/24/14

With the 3-hour time difference, I was well-prepared for an early wake-up call.  We turned down the crib when we checked in and had Kumquat sleep on the second double bed that we had in the room.  She did just fine but I slept with her just to make sure she didn’t wake up with a head injury.

IMG_2713We were up by 5 (not too bad) and Kumquat did a decent job not waking Jes.

IMG_2717Most mornings we would go down to the infinity pool for breakfast.  This infinity pool is so pretty.  IMG_2863It looks like Kumquat could roll right into the ocean if I didn’t have the brakes locked on that stroller.

IMG_2720Lawson Station is the general store at the hotel and it’s awesome.  They have just about everything you need to survive: milk, fruit, toiletries, souveniers, oh and did I mention Spam musubi, made-to-order udon, manapuas, and BUBBIES MOCHI ICE CREAM?!?!  IMG_3520

On top of that, there’s a Peet’s coffee in the hotel and they also sell Dole Whip!  Whut?!  I seriously wouldn’t need to leave this hotel if zombies were attacking Hawaii and we were on lockdown.

IMG_2743

While the beach was still empty and quiet, we took Kumquat back out for her daily “aloha” to Mr. Ocean.  IMG_2749

Yup, she was still not having it.  She clung so tightly that I didn’t really have to hold her.  We did make progress though.  There weren’t any tears but she still wouldn’t stand on the sand.

IMG_2775This day was designated as our pool day and after the beach, we rented a cabana (basically two cushioned lounge chairs with a shade) for the day.  It was going to be our homebase from 8am-6pm today and it was awesome.

IMG_2753

The day before, I took her to the kiddie pool (it’s only 1.5 feet deep) and she was still not sure of standing in it.  The water came up to her chest and eventually she was brave enough to stand and walk around.  Unfortunately, she stumbled and went right into the water – face and all.  I picked her up out of the water and she didn’t cough or cry.  She was mostly spooked and confused.

From that day on, we kept her in the floatie and she was happy again.  It was also nice to have Jes there to help supervise.  It’s scary taking a toddler to the pool by yourself!

IMG_2782After a morning at the pool, we lucked out on having a sleepy toddler passing out in her stroller so we got a nice quiet lunch at Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin.  I had a tasty katsu-don with an oozy egg on top.  Yum.  It was delicious and big enough to have some left over for Kumquat to eat later when she woke up.

IMG_2787

After lunch, we headed back to the pool and met up with the rest of the gang.   IMG_2795

Dayantha and Krissy had gone to Foodland and brought me some poke and Maui Onion chips.  It was perfect with my Mai Tai.IMG_2790The location of our cabanan turned out to be the perfect location for relaxing, hanging out near the wading area, and enjoying a few drinks.

IMG_2810 IMG_2807The Lams and Kwaks also joined us and it was like our own little corner of paradise.

IMG_2822

This kid got used to this whole vacation thing really quick.

IMG_2833

It was so fun hanging out with Holly and Andrew.  Andrew is in an “I don’t like taking pictures” phase.

IMG_2837Before dinner, we hung out near the hammocks and Kumquat enjoyed swinging with Daddy.

IMG_0861We were also greeted by a rainbow that evening!

IMG_2850Eventually, Kumquat had fallen asleep so she missed out on another dinner.  She would have loved this one too.

IMG_2856 We went to Marukame Udon, which has a cafeteria-style service and a line out the door all day long.  The noodles are handmade in the store and it’s so cheap!!IMG_2859The broth is very tasty and was even better with the soft egg added to it.  Andrew ate up all the egg yolk before Holly could even try some.IMG_2858I also picked up a Spam musubi for Kumquat’s breakfast the next morning.  Yes, this kid ate a lot of Spam (aka “bacon” to her) on this trip.

Oahu: Day 1

Day One: Wednesday 4/23

Boy oh boy…where do I begin?  We went to Hawaii for our annual trip and it was one of the best ones yet.  I can’t decide if it’s because we stayed longer than just 2 or 3 nights or if it was the additional company we had or maybe it was because Kumquat is the ripe old age of 2 and understood so much more.  Maybe it’s a combination of all of those things.  Regardless, it was really fun family vacation for the three of us.

IMG_2688We flew on Hawaiian Airlines (our usual) on Wednesday (4/23) and stayed in the Sheraton Waikiki this time.  The flight went pretty well with the exception of when we were boarding the plane with a toddler who was screaming and refusing to walk and a husband who was on a conference call and couldn’t help.

Once we were all settled, the rest of the flight was just fine.  IMG_264920140424-054234.jpgI loved that Kumquat had her own seat and I came well-equipped with food, toys, and the iPad loaded with new apps and videos for her.

Oh, I guess there were two other eventful things that happened on our journey to Hawaii that day:

20140423-114911.jpg1) Kumquat puked in the car on the way to the airport (gross) and IMG_26402) I spilled half a glass of mimosa all over my lap and didn’t have a change of clothing (stupid).

IMG_2625The Lams joined us on the flight, which made it an even more interesting flight.  I think they had it pretty rough considering they were flying with an 18-month-old who didn’t want to nap and a 3-month-old who had to be held the entire time.

IMG_2671Luckily, they did get a moment of respite when Keenan finally fell asleep.  They were exhausted that afternoon when we arrived in Honolulu.

IMG_2692Instead of renting a car for the week, I made arrangements for Roberts Hawaii to pick us up.  It was great, they greet you at luggage claim, take your bags, and whisk you away to your hotel lickety split.  Kumquat especially enjoyed the bus ride and Jes took a nap.

20140424-055749.jpgWhen we arrived, Dayantha and Krissy were out front and we we went to have lunch at Ramen Nakamura.  IMG_2694

We were all starving and Kumquat thoroughly enjoyed her cup of ice water with a spoon.  I guess she was pretty hot too. IMG_2695 IMG_2697Here’s my kimchee miso ramen with a side of fried rice.  The ice-cold beer from the ABC Store threw it over the top for our first meal on the island.

IMG_2695 IMG_2703 The rest of the day was spent at the pool.  Jes took his usual monster-long after-flying-to-Hawaii nap while Kumquat and I met up with the Fernandos.  It’s fun having other friends in the same hotel – especially when they’re able to be an additional set of eyes on a constantly-moving toddler in a pool.  Fortunately, she liked the pool and having the 1/2-foot wading area was perfect for her.  The pool at the Sheraton is definitely a +1 over Moana Surfrider.IMG_2707

I also took Kumquat to say “hello” to Mr. Ocean.  She was not a fan.  This was the only time she was calm enough to stand on the sand.  It was at the farthest point from the water by the wall adjacent to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.  Otherwise, it was all tears and clinging on like a koala.

IMG_2711Dinner was at Duke’s and we stayed longer for drinks.  I got my first order of poke and it came with furikake rice.  Nice touch, Duke’s.IMG_2710Yoon came by after another social function and we were lucky to have a kid that sleeps well in a noisy restaurant.IMG_2712

Thank goodness for our stroller.  This girl was knocked out.

2 years old!

2yearsI don’t know whether to cry or celebrate.  I guess I’ll be doing both.  I can’t believe my little Kumquat is two years old today.  It’s true when they say the days are long but the years are short.

Two years ago, we were blessed with this ball of cuteness.  Over the past 24 months, she has made me laugh, cry, and fall more and more in love every day.  She frustrates me.  She also makes me SO proud.  She gives the best hugs (only if she wants to) and has inherited the Chammy sense of humor.  She’s a little crazy but it makes her very entertaining.  She loves to sing, count, and make other people sing for her.  She definitely has a bossy side but such a sweet kindness toward her stuffed animals at the same time.  I’m hoping her stubborn streak will help her be successful in life but I also hope that she’ll learn to let things go when it matters.

IMG_2089Happy 2nd Birthday, KK.  No matter which name you choose when you grow up, you’ll always be Kumquat to us. Love you to pieces!!

carb overload

IMG_2392Since Humphry Slocombe opened in the Ferry Plaza, it was the perfect opportunity for the girls to meet up with me for a Saturday morning food crawl.  IMG_2349Ranee and Stephanie brought their families over from Walnut Creek and we had quite a feast.

IMG_2375It started out with Roli Roti.  You can never go wrong with starting your day with a porchetta sandwich.

IMG_2358Next stop was Blue Bottle for some coffee and a piping-hot waffle straight out of the griddle.

IMG_2368

The best part of the morning was the ice cream.  I love this photo of the two toddlers begging their daddies for ice cream.  Their techniques are very similar and very effective.

IMG_2372

Kumquat also received this cute bunch of tulips from someone promoting a flower service in SF.

What a fun morning.  We did all that eating in about 2 hours before we had to part ways and Kumquat fell asleep for a 2-hour nap. Let’s do this again soon, Ladies!!

weekend recap

IMG_2104

We had a beautiful weekend.  On Saturday morning, I went for a 3-mile run and then hung out along Embarcadero with my little girl.

IMG_2063We also stopped for breakfast and a little street music.

IMG_2089

We had a fun morning before heading home for her nap.

IMG_2115Later that day, we jumped on Caltrain and sat on the floor in the bike car like peasants.  Actually, we felt more like cattle.  Heh heh.

IMG_2136We had dinner at Blue Line Pizza and ordered a thin crust AND deep dish pizza for the 5 of us.  I liked the deep dish one better than the thin but they were both pretty good.  Unfortunately, our table was a bit crowded and I ended up knocking over (AND BREAKING) a wine glass by the end of the meal.  Doh!IMG_2150

After dinner, we took a walk down the street and I got this cute photo of Kumquat with her uncle and daddy.

IMG_2175Our ride home was a lot more comfortable and I was surprised to look down and find the little one asleep next to me.  Maybe there’s hope for our 6-hour flight to Hawaii in a couple weeks.

IMG_2198Sunday was more laid back.  We were home in our pjs for most of the morning.  We did make it outside at least once and I’m glad we did.  It was so sunny and warm!  Who says SF has terrible weather?!
