Chomp Chomp

On the day before Mother’s Day (5/7), we joined forces once again to play a mean game of wheelchair basketball.  Our team played four games and won three of them.  We made it to the Semi Finals and lost to the team that ultimately won the whole tournament…not too shabby.  Our coach actually did a good job coaching us since he had been playing with the organization for a couple of months now.  He even gave me a tip for what to do the next time a big guy tries to steal the ball from me.  Yep, that happened to me that day.   In the end, we went home as the most decorated team with me receiving the “Least Likely to Be a Wheelchair Basketball Player” trophy and Teresa received “Best Sportsmanship”.  Haha.

We had a really good time and ended the day calling ourselves the Children’s Chompers.  I tried to make t-shirts for our team this year but our vendor failed us miserably.  Oh well, we will certainly be back next year and maybe with t-shirts to show off our new name.

Six Weeks and Counting

We just finished our 6th run around Lake Merritt last night and we’re still going strong!  It started out with just 3 of us and last night we had 8!  Yippee!  I feel like Forrest Gump.

To celebrate our new healthier happy hour, we had a real HH at Lake Chalet after the run.  It was a warm afternoon, which turned into a mild evening on the lake.  We did cartwheels on the grass and shared appetizers and lots of laughs, as usual.

Check out this gorgeous view from our table!

Last-minute HH

On Thursday morning, Stephanie informed me that Mai was driving up for a 4-day weekend.  So we rounded up the troops and had an impromptu HH at Marc 49.  Mai stopped by the hospital during the last hour of work and then we all met up for some wine and cheese.

Afterward, Teresa, Steph, and I walked ourselves to the BART station.  The best part of DST is having just enough daylight to safely stumble home.  On our way, we stopped at Jack in the Box.  I don’t remember the last time I had gone there but my chicken pita was tasty that night.

Ballerina

My co-worker approached me a few months ago about taking photos of her.  She has been a ballet dancer since she was little and has been recently feeling her age.  She’s only a month older than me and wanted to get some photos of her while she was still strong and flexible enough to perform her leaps and poses.

So, on Sunday morning, we met up at Golden Gate Park and I got a bunch of shots of her in two different costumes.  It was so cool to see what she could do.  There was a little girl (~5 years old) and her dad and she was so in love with Renee.  We even caught her doing jumps and poses while her dad took photos of her off to the side.  So cute.

I love how many of my co-workers have other talents on the side.  We had a lot of fun during the photoshoot and Renee LOVED her photos.  Yay!  Here are the rest of the photos.

Lake Merritt

The girls and I started our casual running club on Tuesday and we ran the perimeter of Lake Merritt, which happens to be 3 miles around. I used to run this route while in grad school and it had been that long since I had last been there. They’ve made a lot of cool improvements and it was a great place to kick off our weekly run and the first sunny day in a couple weeks.

Unfortunately, I had some crazy knee pain the day after.  I felt a twinge in the morning but my job really exacerbated.  I’m kneeling, bending, and running up and down two flights of stairs all day and I really felt it when I got home.  Fortunately, after icing it twice that night and taking Advil before going to bed, I’m back to my old self.  That was weird.

It’s just the beginning…

About a month ago, Teresa and I were talking about running the Oakland Twilight 5K.  It’s a fun run that occurs the night before the Marathon on Sunday.  After deciding to sign up, we recruited the rest of the Rehab crew to play along and they all agreed!  None of them were regular runners but they had enough time to train.  So, on Saturday evening, I took BART to Oakland 12th St. Station and picked up my bib at the Expo.  That’s where we met up and took the school bus to to race at Jack London Square.  The race was a “scenic” Oakland race through the ghetto and along the water and it was super flat.  We all had a blast and were rewarded at the end with free PopChips and MGD 64s.  Woo!  To celebrate, we had margaritas and tapas at Cocina Poblana.  Good times…good times.  Since everyone had such as good time, we decided to start a casual running club.  It starts Tuesday and we’re heading out to Lake Merritt for our first 3-mile run around the lake.

Here are the rest of the photos.  They’re all kinda blurry since I brought my waterproof camera.
