Guilty

Do you have a job where you’re given the biggest guilt trip EVAR when you call in sick?  Well I do.  It all started with a shallow cough yesterday at work, which got worse overnight and was coupled with some crazy aches and pains all over my body and head.  I called and left a message on my supervisor’s voicemail AND a detailed email about my schedule around 7:30 am and thought everything was taken care of.  That was, until I got a phone call a little later in the morning from my supervisor who scolded me for not calling her earlier at home or on her cell phone instead of her work voicemail.  I can see why that stressed her out since she wasn’t prepared for the schedule changes when she arrived at the hospital but I couldn’t help feeling so lousy after I hung up with her.

I certainly care about the welfare of my patients and they do deserve therapy but not from a possibly contagious therapist!  Because of the guilt-ridden day that I had at home today, I have decided to go to work tomorrow regardless of how I feel.  I currently have a 100.8-degree fever and chills.  Maybe tomorrow I can walk in with a fever and pass out in the middle of one of my sessions.  That would be awesome.

Crap x10

Jes is away for a couple days so it’s just me and the dawg this weekend. I just finished the longest week EVER so when I came home, I threw some laundry in the machine, put on my PJs, and turned on some bad TV. Friday nights are my favorite part of the week because I get to just relax, waste time, stay up late, and get stuff done (if I want to). AND I still have two more days left!!

10 crappy things that happened to me this week:

  1. I had to work on NYE
  2. I had to work on New Year’s Day.
  3. It was too cold and far away to watch the NYE fireworks.
  4. The BART ticket vendors gave me a hard time for no reason.
  5. I had to walk the dog in Hurricane winds and rain.
  6. My BART train was delayed both ways in one day totaling a 3-hour commute.
  7. Coffee spilled INSIDE my backpack and all over my jacket. Don’t ask how that happened.
  8. Dropped my brand new Crackberry on the sidewalk and now it has a gigantic scuff on the front.
  9. I had 3 kids throw up on me in one day.
  10. They ran out of oatmeal at the cafeteria this morning so I had to starve until lunch.

Thank goodness for weekends.

Ice Cream Sammiches

At work, we celebrate everyone’s birthdays by drawing names out of a hat. It was my turn to prepare birthday dessert for the birthday person last week so I decided to make ice cream sandwiches. The birthday girl loves mint chip ice cream so this was perfect. On Thursday night, I baked 24 round chocolate cookies and packed them up in a shoebox. Of course I had to have a sample and the cookie came out nice and chewy but strong enough to hold the ice cream.

On Friday, I set up a cookie/ice cream bar for all to enjoy. Unfortunately, by the time I served them, the cookies were a little on the hard side. Everyone seemed to still enjoy the special treat but they could have just been very convincing. Regardless, I think the birthday girl enjoyed her treat. I have an idea for how to tweak the recipe a bit so I’ll be making another batch soon. Once I get it right, I’ll make sure to share the recipe.

This sucks.

With Christmas behind us it’s back to the grind for me.  We got home around 6:00 last night, walked across the street for dinner, and both passed out by 9:30.  I woke up early this morning to go to work and it sucks being here instead of home with my family.  Fortunately for me, I got a lot of cancellations so I get to hangout and surf a little bit before cranking out 5 more reports.  Oh how I miss my two-week breaks but I’ve gotta make money somehow.  C’est la vie!

I’m still working on the photos from my Christmas vacation so stay tuned for those.

I choose you!

piplup.jpgBack in the day (circa 1998), I played Pokemon the GameBoy Game and watched the Pokemon cartoon. Some people made fun of me and Jesse thought I was totally retarded but it sure did pay off today at work. I see a set of 8-year-old twin boys for handwriting help and they are obsessed with Pokemon. They hate handwriting but when it comes to Pokemon, they will go on about it forever. Since I see them one-at-a-time for 45 minutes each, I got about an hour and a half of leveling this and badges that. They’re currently playing the Diamond and Pearl versions on their Nintendo DS right now and I have no idea what the characters’ names are. I think that’s the equivalent of Version 4 and I only played Versions 1 and 2. Fortunately for me, the fundamentals of the game haven’t changed much so I was able to hold up my end of the conversation quite well. I think they were even surprised. For example, when one of them said “Piplup is a water type.”, I TOTALLY understood what he was talking about. One of them also said, “Team Rocket is really funny.” And I responded by asking, “Is Meowth still hanging out with them?”. The look on his face was classic. It was a look of shock and confusion, which followed with, “How did YOU know?!” Haha.

Next week, I’m going to make them write sentences about their favorite Pokemons until they feel like their hands will fall off. It’s going to be awesome.

cheap eats

I’ve gotten into the habit of eating a big hearty bowl of oatmeal each morning at work.  The rehab department is located just next door to the cafeteria so it’s very convenient.  I’m just amazed at how cheap some items are and how much more expensive it is for other items.  For example, my oatmeal with brown sugar and raisins (with the 10% employee discount) is only 72 cents.  But if I want a crossaint sandwich, it’s $3.78! It’s not a ridiculous price but it’s significantly more than my daily oatmeal.

The other day I was feeling pretty grumpy in the morning and the oatmeal was looking especially sticky.

So, I skedaddled to the grill area to check out what else I could get.  I decided to treat myself to some made-to-order french toast and a sausage patty.  Not only was it yummy but it costed me only $1.50!!!  I was so pumped and enjoyed 5 minutes of sitting at my desk with a knife and fork, happily eating my yummy (and cheap) breakfast.
