All Cleared Up

When we arrived in Honolulu on Saturday, there was a strange haze over the island. The Hawaii that I remember had clear blue skies and clear blue water but on that day, it was a grayish blue in the sky and the water looked darker than usual. Apparently, the haze is due to the volcanic activity going on on the Big Island. It’s sulfur in the air coupled with a light wind that is almost non-existent. Yoon called it “Vog” and said that all the locals have been just as confused by the gray skies as I was. Anyway, the Tradewinds returned on Sunday and the sky was bright blue again and so was the water. Thank Goodness!

So, we spent most of Sunday outside in the sun and water. In the morning, I got up early to go down to the beach to take some photos. On trips like this, I am so in love with my 18-200mm lens. I can get wide angles and zoom close enough to get shots of the surfers from the shore.

Once Jes was up, we had a fancy breakfast on the veranda and I tasted some of Jes’ Kalua Pork hash served under some eggs benedict. Yum! We then took a morning stroll to the Waikiki Aquarium to make our usual visit and donation of $18 in support of their little exhibit. On our way back, we stopped along the water to watch the trigger fish zooming left and right in the ocean. They’re so fast!

The afternoon was spent on Waikiki beach in the sun and water. We snagged a spot in the hotel’s roped off beach area where we had two lawn chairs, a small table, and umbrella. The best part was that there’s a server who comes by to bring you cocktails. Right on the beach!

We had a fancy dinner at Chef Mavro, which was such a fun experience. I got the four-course tasting and Jes got the six-course tasting. Each and every dish was paired with a generous pour of wine and by the end of the meal, we both stumbled out of the restaurant and into the cab. What fun! If you’re in the mood to splurge, this is a good place to do it. Their servers are all very attentive and the food was prepared as if I was a judge on Top Chef.

And…HAPPY 4TH BIRTHDAY KOA!!

Aloha from Hawaii!

We arrived on Saturday morning at 11:00 am HST and were greeted with leis from Yoon when she picked us up in her convertible. How awesome is that?! We immediately went to Boots and Kimo’s for some breakfast, which included some banana pancakes (what they’re famous for) that were actually pretty good. Did you all hear that?! It had BANANAS in them and I thought it was ok!!!!!! I had an initial gag with the first bite but there’s something in the macadamia nut sauce that makes up for it so I managed to eat a couple more bites. I think Dayantha’s right, the sauce does taste like melted vanilla ice cream. I also had some pretty tasty Hawaiian sausage that I didn’t even know existed. Ah…beakatude’s got a new favorite breakfast place on the island!!

Afterwards, we drove to Lanikai Beach to take a look around. We couldn’t stay long since we were all not dressed for the occasion. On our way to the hotel, we stopped at Bubbies, which was HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by a co-worker/friend who said she’d kill me if I didn’t try it. So, I went and it was so yummy. They have mochi ice cream and I tried lychee, pineapple coconut, and chocolate mint. Yum. Thanks for the recommendation, R! That photo was taken just for you. 🙂

Back at the hotel, we unpacked, changed, and went downstairs for some cocktails. We then did some shopping and had a nice steak dinner to end the night. Being on vacation is awesome.

Doing My Part

dsc_3098.jpg

Today is Earth Day and I’m happy to report that I’ve done my part so far this year.  We’re on Day 84 of the “We Have No Car” Experiment and so far it’s been just fine.  With the rise of gas prices, constant “Green This” and “Green That” everywhere I look, and more money in the bank to play with, I think the slight inconvenience is worth it.  Zipcar has been working out well and has become a fun game against the clock.  Public transportation has been mostly efficient with a sprinkling of annoyances and getting cab in the city has been pretty easy.

SF is certainly a liberal place but maybe there’s a little benefit to it.  Grocery stores are no longer allowed to use plastic bags, there’s a recycling bin just about everywhere you go, and bike lanes are everywhere.   All of this might help us reduce our carbon footprint a little but I just consider it a nice excuse to buy a cute tote bag.  🙂

Visitors

This past weekend my parents, Johnny, and Joy came up to visit.  They stayed with us in our dinky condo and we used up every square inch of the place.  On Saturday, they arrived around lunchtime and my mom got cookin’ right away.  There was Thai BBQ chicken, spicy beef salad, papaya salad (made with cabbage), and plenty of beer.  It was awesome.   Afterwards, we tried to take Koa to Fort Funston but it was way too windy.  We ended up heading back and I took Brother and Joy around Dolores Park/Mission District for a little explorin’.

On Sunday morning, we had a mean Southern breakfast at Just For You Cafe and then headed out to Union Square for a little shopping.

The parents got to experience public transportation and I picked up a couple new t-shirts for myself.

Since the weather was much more pleasant, we took Koa back to Fort Funston and all got a little workout on our way back up the cliff.

This morning the family packed up and took me to work on their way back home.  It was nice getting a ride with them but certainly made it hard for me to get back to work this morning.  It made me a little melancholic for the first couple hours and the day really dragged for me.  I guess I really have missed my family.  It may have been 8 months since I moved up here but I guess I still need my Mommy, Daddy, and Little Brother sometimes.

I have many photos to sift through so stay tuned.

Coffee Anyone?!

My back has been pretty tweaky this week and I was in so much pain that I was sent home early today. So, I laid in bed and crocheted this little guy. I shall call him my SuperDuper Cafe Con Leche.

More stories from the grind…

Chatting with a 4-year-old girl (same one with the boyfriend)

“Can I tell you what my little sister did this morning?! She peed in her bed.” I gave her a surprised look and she said in a hushed voice, “That’s pretty bad, isn’t it?” She totally sounded like a teenager telling me something really scandalous. So I played along and said, “Yeah, but it happens sometimes. I bet you don’t do that anymore.” And she replied, “No, but I peed in my underwear yesterday.” and gave a spritely chuckle. HAHAHAHA. At least she’s honest.

Chatting with an 8-year-old boy

As he’s drawing a picture of a dinosaur, my little friend causally asked, “Do you have any kids?” I replied, “Nope.” He stopped drawing and slowly looked up at me. “So, you’re married but you don’t have any kids?” All I could say was, “Nope, but I’ll be sure to let you know when I get some.”
