We’re not in Irvine anymore…

I’ve had an interesting time here this past month and a half but my commute to work has been pretty ordinary…until today.

I was riding BART this morning as I usually do. We all know that food and drinks aren’t allowed but no one really gets called out on it. I bring my coffee on board every morning and no one ever seems bothered if I take a couple sips on my way to work. Today was a bit different.

As I was working on my Sudoku puzzle, I notice the middle-aged man seated behind me standing in the aisle and lecturing the younger guy seated across the aisle to my right. I couldn’t actually hear what he was saying because I was listening to my iPod and we were traveling through the TranBay Tube, which usually gets really loud. After removing my earphones, I catch the last half of the lecture and realize that he was upset with the younger guy for eating his breakfast sandwich on the train.

The next thing I know, I hear the the older man (still behind me) saying “There’s a guy here on the train wearing a green and red vest with black-rimmed glasses eating and drinking.” I didn’t actually turn around to look at the man to see if he was really calling the driver. Is he just bluffing? There’s always the chance that he’s a little cuckoo and talking to no one. Well, just a few seconds later, the train conductor makes an announcement overhead and says, “May I have your attention, please. There is someone eating on the train and food and drinks are not allowed on the train. People not following the rules are subject to being escorted off the train by security at the next stop.” Holy crap. This guy was serious! He just called the train conductor and reported him! The man was so proud of himself that he continued to give the guy in the vest a hard time. So, at the next stop, the guy in the vest got off the train. Dude, that’s not how I’d want to spend my morning. Luckily the man didn’t see my travel mug in my lap.

You’d think that that would be enough excitement for one day but I was wrong. This afternoon as I was seated outside of the hospital waiting for the shuttle to the BART station, I notice police cars zooming past the hospital. That’s nothing. It happens all the time so I go back to my book. Seconds later, I hear sirens and a whole army of squad cars weaving through traffic. I look up at the girl seated next to me and she said to me that she heard two pops. Pops?! You mean gunshots?! *sigh* I knew that I was working in a shady area but I wasn’t expecting gunfire next door to us.

Moments later, we see 8-10 more squad cars and 5-6 motorcycle cops zooming by, a helicopter circling the area from above, and one of our ambulances pulling out of the driveway. Crazy. I was just thinking to myself, “Oh man, the shuttle’s going to be a while.” and “I hope the guy doesn’t run into the hospital.” Luckily, the shuttle got through the traffic and I made it home in one piece.

PBJ Fun

On Sunday, we went to Alameda to visit Jimmy and Eleen. We brought the dog along and ventured out to Webster Street where they held their annual Peanut Butter Jam Festival. It was a small street fair with kiddie rides, kettle korn, local crafts, electric car displays, and free blood pressure checks.  It was quite an entertaining morning with Dupree’s old housemates.

Here’s Jimmy and Eleen supporting their community with their souvenir beer mugs.

Afterwards, we picked up our bikes from Jimmy’s house and Jes went for a short bike ride with Ryan and Bang. I didn’t get to witness the disaster but I can just imagine three melters huffin’ and puffin’ across the Golden Gate Bridge and cursing the whole way back to Bang’s apartment. Hm. It sounded like they were all feeling pretty rusty but with a few more rides, they should be ready for a century. Right, guys?!

Later in the evening, the Sokol-Juns came over with ribs and BBQ beans. We got to try out our new dining table and chairs for the first time and it was nice to be seated at a table for dinner again.

Jes and Beak went up the hill…

dsc_8617a.jpgOn Saturday evening, Jes and I went to Frank and Kathleen’s Wedding. Frank is one of Jes’ buddies from his Xpedior days so it was like a mini-reunion for him. The wedding took place at The Fairmont, which is located on California, which means it’s at the top of the hill. We took Muni from our condo, got off at Powell, and then HIKED up the hill. At one pointm it got really steep (looked like it was a 30-degree angle) and was pretty rough – especially since I was wearing 3-inch heels that slipped a little with every step. Those little rubber nubbins on my running shoes could have really come in handy. When we finally made it up the hill, we barely made it to the ceremony and we were pretty winded and sweaty…gross.

The wedding was pretty extravagant with the Grand Ballroom decorated to the nines. Frank got pretty emotional at the altar and Kathleen looked simply beautiful. We had a pretty good time and everyone got to catch up with each other. Luckily, we got a ride home and didn’t have to make the trek back down the hill in a drunken stupor.

Update (9/30/07): Photos from the wedding are ready!

Jack’s Pre-Party

I went to Michelle’s Baby Shower on Saturday afternoon. As I had written in my card to them, I still can’t believe our melter friends are going to be parents. Oh well…I think they’ll figure it all out by the time Jack is 6 months old. Haha. The shower was just down the street from my home at Michelle and Ryan’s loft. It was great to see Michelle and Ryan’s moms so excited about the arrival of the baby. There were games, food, and of course, lots of gifts. The baby is expected to arrive on November 3rd and we should be collecting our $1000 very soon…muhahahaha.

Update (9/30/07): The photos are ready for your viewing pleasure.

Fort FUNston

We met up with Jen, Kevin, and Kona at Fort Funston today. It’s a really nice beach where dogs are allowed to roam off-leash located just south of San Francisco. We strolled down to the beach and Koa did a really nice job staying close-by and responding to our calls. He was a bit hesitant going down to the beach area but seemed fine once he saw all the dogs and running space. Kona showed off her ball-catching skills while Koa chased her back and forth. He almost got tricked into running into the water but applied the brakes just in time. The hike back up was much trickier but everyone made it and got a short workout too. We’ll definitely return to this place very soon. What fun!

Here are photos from our afternoon.

Feast at LuLu

imgp0541.jpgWe took Jes out for his birthday last night. We all walked to LuLu and had a family-style feast. The food was your average SF fare and pretty overpriced but I think Jes had a good time. The highlight of the evening was his Glenlivet with a birthday candle. I think it was much better than any birthday cake we could have gotten for him.

Thanks to everyone for joining us and spending a pretty penny. We’ll make it up to you all with a real dinner at our place very soon. Happy Birthday, Jes!

Here are photos from our dinner.
