Year in Review 2014

2014 seemed to pass me by so quickly.  Is this just a sign of getting old?  Or maybe I’ve been so distracted by the 2-year-old in my house that I haven’t been able to keep up? Nonetheless, it has been a fun year.

Best Vacation:
Hawaii in April.  I know it’s been my favorite vacation every year but there was something extra special about this one. Here are my thoughts:

IMG_30501) KK was old enough to really enjoy and remember her time there.  She also conquered her fear of Mr. Ocean and loved playing at the beach.

IMG_32062) We celebrated a dear friend’s wedding.  Yoon and Kurt got married and threw a really fun party afterward.

IMG_28333) Because it was a wedding trip, we got to vacation with all of our closest and oldest friends.  The last time we traveled together as a large group was probably in 2001 in Tahoe.  Some had kids and almost everyone is married now.  It could very well be our last big trip all together.

IMG_1169Worst Vacation Moment:
The worst vacation moment was when we had to wait in a 3-hour line to get through immigration in Puerto Vallarta Airport.  It was Christmas Day and some workers decided to play hooky unexpectedly.

IMG_7047Coolest Vacation Moment:
When we went to Tahoe for a long weekend, we sat on the beach under a tent in the middle of a thunderstorm.  It went from pouring rain to sunshine within minutes of each other.  Very cool.

IMG_3992 Best Meal:
Mother’s Day dinner at Saison.  It was right across the street from our house and had lots of interesting flavor combinations in the tasting menu that I hadn’t tried before.  It was also hands down our most expensive meal of the year.

Worst Meal:
I can’t really think of any.  I’d have to say I ate well in 2014. 🙂

Favorite TV Shows:
Once Upon a Time, So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef, Selfie (un-aired episodes are on Hulu!), and Downton Abbey – the first three are also KK’s favorites.  She calls them “Elsa and Anna”, “Dancing”, and “Cooking”.

Biggest Failure:
Fortunately, I have none to report this year.

10weeks_010215_bBiggest Accomplishment:
After a whole year of trying, we finally got a positive pregnancy test at the end of November.  KK is going to be a big sister and I think she’s ready.

We did a lot this past year and yet it seemed like we were just chugging along steadily.  Work has been stable for both of us and Jes went on a business trip to Europe in 2014.  KK also went on her first international trip and got a couple stamps on her first passport.  We’ve all been pretty healthy and Jia and Jason are expecting twins this year!  It’s gonna be a crazy 2015!!

Round 2

IMG_0294aWe have big news: I’m 11 weeks pregnant and it’s a boy!!  Our estimated due date is August 1st.

2weeks_111414Here is a picture of him as a hatched blastocyst.  At that point, he was just a ball of cells.

7weeks_121514On 11/23/14, I went in for my blood test and it was positive!  On 12/15/14, I had my first ultrasound, which confirmed that there was something growing inside.  He had a strong heart beat and was just under a centimeter long.  If you can’t tell, the embryo is that little bean-shaped thing hanging from the top of the black circle.

10weeks_010215_aOn Friday, I had my 10-week ultrasound and the little guy waved to me!  He has 4 limbs and actually looked like baby. This is the side view.

10weeks_010215_bWe also got a front view with all his limbs showing.  Again, there was a strong heart beat and he had tripled in size over the last 3 weeks!  No wonder I’ve been feeling so fat.

For those who are interested, I thought I’d write a little about our year-long baby project. Don’t read this part if this stuff grosses you out or if it’s TMI.

It all started last January (2014) when we decided to start trying for #2.  I went back to PFC (the clinic where we got help for KK) and my doctor said that we wouldn’t have to change the game plan.  The problem that I have with conceiving naturally is that my pituitary gland is lazy and doesn’t produce the hormone that signals the release of the egg from my ovaries.  So, without medical intervention, we would still be child-less.

We started with IUI, which is the least invasive method that involves ultrasounds to figure out when my follicles were mature and taking medicine to help the mature egg get released.  That’s how we conceived KK.  Well, after 4 failed attempts, my doctor advised us to go to the next step, which was IVF.  He said the reason why IUI wasn’t working was likely due to the age of my eggs and that most would not survive because of genetic problems.  Essentially, each time we tried, I miscarried because of a genetic problem. I took a long break and it happened to coincide with our trip to Hawaii.  It was a GREAT time to be off meds and to be able to eat and drink freely.  I’d consider that my last hurrah.

We started the IVF process in the summer after I took a month off of meds and intervention.  This process was WAY more invasive and costly.  We had to go through a consent and counseling process before I could even order my meds.  The meds included lots of injectables plus the oral meds that I was already taking.

The first step was to get my eggs to grow.  I had to get all these hormones injected every night.  Fortunately, Jesse was able to do all the injections and most of them didn’t hurt too much.  It was just an intense couple weeks of at least 2-3 injections in my belly per night and a giant needle one in my butt the night before the eggs were harvested. I had at least 5 ultrasounds and blood draws throughout this month to monitor the progress of my follicles.  By the end of the process, I was pretty uncomfortable because it was like carrying two sacs of marbles in my abdomen.

On 9/9/14, they harvested the eggs (I was sedated) and they retrieved 35 eggs!  Whoa.  I guess my supply is not the problem.  I was so bloated for the following week and looked 16 weeks pregnant.  This was probably the worst part of the whole process. Once the oocytes were harvested, they were fertilized in the lab and over the next 8 days, they were each analyzed and given a rating.  By the end of the 8 days, we had 11 good embyros to biopsy.  That’s a crazy attrition rate.

The next step was for the genetic testing to be done.  They biopsied each of the embryos to check for genetic abnormalities.  All the embryos that had anything other than 46 chromosomes were discarded.  We took this extra step to increase our chances of a viable embryo.  It also weeded out the most common problems with old eggs, including Trisomy 21 (Downs’ Syndrome).  As a bi-product of the genetic testing, we also knew the gender of each embryo.  After the biopsies, we got 4 embryos with 46 chromosomes: 2 boys and 2 girls.  We were hoping for a boy and the best-looking embryo turned out to be a boy.  So, that’s what the doctor decided to implant.  They were frozen for a month while I had to get physically ready, which involved a rest month and then starting the injections again.

The final step was the implantation, which occurred on 11/14/14.  I was awake for this procedure and watched on the ultrasound screen how they released the defrosted embryo with a catheter.  Two weeks later, I had a blood test and the rest is history!

I know this was a really unnatural process but it’s just the path we had to take.  It also takes a little bit of stress and guessing out of this round since we can be a little more confident of the gender and health of this kid so we can start donating/giving away KK’s girly stuff.

IMG_1525Oh and after my last ultrasound, the doctor said “congratulations, you’ve graduated!”  IMG_1547The nurse also handed me a gift: a pregnancy book and a cute onesie that says “Made in San Francisco”.  Haha.  Funny.

The Passport Saga

IMG_9916The last 24 hours have been very stressful here.  It started last night when Jes came home while I was filling out a passport application for KK.  I needed her social security card and all our legal documents so I took it out of the safe and gave Jes his passport for his business trip to London and Grenoble.  I happened to look to see when it expires and it had said April 2014!!!  OH NOOOOO!!!  He leaves on Saturday evening and it was already Thursday night! The trip could not be postponed and it would have been a really embarrassing mess if he had to cancel for this reason.

So, we scrambled for answers on the internet and made some calls but it was not looking good.  The Passport Agency that processes last-minute passports didn’t have an appointment until Monday at 10:00 am!  Jes found a 24-hour service and paid a ridiculous amount of money for it.  The next step was to get his picture taken so we went to Costco.  It was still only 6:30 so we had a chance!  When we arrived, the photo guy said he could take his picture but it wouldn’t be ready until 10 am the next day.  Uh oh…

IMG_9901So I called the nearest CVS to see if they would be able to take and print a passport photo tonight and the guy said, “Yes, we are available.”  Nice.  So we drove down to San Bruno and they had it ready in just minutes.  We even took the opportunity to get KK’s photo taken too.  She stood on a stool and actually looked at the camera.  No smile but I’m perfectly fine with it.

Once we got home, Jes looked up the 24-hour service again and it said that they wouldn’t be able to deliver until Monday morning.  What?!  So, his heart sank and decided to wake up at 5 am to call them.  I think the only person who slept last night was KK.

At 5am, the alarm went off and Jes called.  The guy said they wouldn’t be able to deliver today and said that he would refund his money at 6am.  In the meantime, Jes happened to be on Yelp and read some reviews from people who had gone to the Passport Agency without an appointment.  One of the reviewers said to go early – like 6:45 early!  So at about 5:45 am, I heard Jes take a shower.  I thought, “he must be really stressed out”.  Then he got dressed and left the house!  I texted him from bed “where are you going?”  and he said, “state department”.  I think he meant the Passport Agency.  So there he was at 6-something in the morning all by himself.  He was first in line for about 30 minutes before 3 more people showed up.  Wow, that reviewer wasn’t kidding.

IMG_9908KK and I were up and ready by 8am so we walked down to the office to see how things were going.  By then it was 8:30 and they let Jes in.  He got his paperwork processed and met us at the Specialty’s next door with a receipt that said he could pick up his passport at 3:30.  It was sort of a relief but there was still chance there would be a delay or his application would be rejected.

In addition to dealing with Jes’ passport, we walked down to the Sutter Post Office to process KK’s stuff.  When we arrived the lady asked “do you have an appointment?”  I had called the night before and the automated message said that this location did not require an appointment and didn’t even give me the option.  Luckily, they weren’t very busy and the 9:15 appointment didn’t show.  So, we got everything processed and KK’s passport should arrive in about 2 weeks.  Woot.

IMG_9917Later this afternoon, Jes went back to the Passport Agency and he had his passport in his hot little hands by 3:30 pm and he can go on his trip tomorrow.  Phew.  I hope this never happens to us again.  Luckily mine doesn’t expire until 2021.  Is it possible to set an alarm for something that far out?!  I’ll have to find out.

The End.

October

Is it really October 26th already?!  Didn’t I JUST celebrate my birthday?!  Well, this has been a busy month at work and at home and has likely resulted in the sprouting of 4 grey hairs on the top of my head this month.  *sigh*

The rate of blogging on beakatude hasn’t been as frequent as it used to be.  It’s been so bad lately that I felt the need to recap some highlights from this month before it ends.  I’ll be traveling down to Cerritos for Halloween/Alice’s Birthday and that will require an entire post or two all on its own.

Let’s start out with some tasty eats from this month:

IMG_8687

These are the mini waffles and 6 fried chicken wings that I had Little Skillet.  Actually, they opened up a bar/restaurant right next door to the window and called it Victory Hall & Parlor.  They serve the same menu but now there’s plenty of places to sit and you can order a drink too!

IMG_8786

Ah…this is an old favorite and still as good as the first one I had.  It’s an open-faced smoked salmon sandwich from Cap’n Mike’s Holy Smoke at the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market on Saturdays.  KK likes it because she gets all of my capers.

IMG_8864

For brunch one morning, I had this Crab and Avocado Eggs Benedict from a food truck called Benedict Arnold’s.  It was parked at the SOMA StrEat Food Park on the morning we were there waiting for our car to be serviced by the Costco Tire Center.

IMG_9003

It’s been nice and warm this month and we had dinner outdoors one night at Sauce, located in the Belden Place alley.  These are the tater tots: made of pureed potato with bits of bacon mixed in, rolled into balls, and then fried.  Reminded me of miniature potato croquettes.

OK.  Now for the rest of this month:

IMG_8702

As I had mentioned, we had a warm first half of October.  It was warm enough to take a dip in our pool.

IMG_8720

Fleet Week came and left.  I saw the Blue Angels fly over the Bay Bridge one evening as I was driving home from work as they were practicing for the weekend show.  We missed the show this year (on both days!) because it coincided with KK’s nap.  Oh well, at least I got to see them from our condo window every once in a while.

IMG_9050

I did a lot of running this past month and enjoyed a few solo runs in the wee hours of the morning.  This morning was particularly neato because the fog was rolling over the bridge near Treasure Island.

IMG_9064

This is my favorite photo of the month.  It looks staged but it was completely not.  I was just able to press the button on my phone at just the right time.  I also love the fact that KK can pump a swing now.

IMG_9106

For Halloween this year, KK is going to be Piglet from Winnie the Pooh.  I decided to make her costume and was able to whip it out during her nap on the day I stayed home to take her to the doctor for her check-up.  Here’s my pattern for the body.  It came out a little long but I managed to tweak it just fine.  You’ll see the final product a little later this week.

IMG_9133

Sleep deprivation has also been a theme for this month.  KK has been going through some weird sleep patterns this month and she kept me up every 1-2 hours all night for the past 3 days.  Luckily she sorta figured it out last night and I got to sleep in 4-hour chunks.  Woot!

IMG_9172

And finally, the Giants have made it to the World Series again for the third time in the seven years we’ve lived here.  IMG_9261

This was the scene around the 7th inning last night before the crowd rushed out.  The energy is actually pretty fun and the rowdiness has been peaceful so far (because they’re winning).  I’m rooting for them to win the whole thing just out of fear that my neighborhood will be rioted if they don’t.  Go Giants.IMG_9260

Some people at work don’t believe that I live RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET from AT&T Park when they ask me where I live.  This is the view from our front door and that’s Willie Mays Plaza right out front.

And of course, this month will always have significance to me because the anniversary of Koa’s passing, which also falls on the same day of KK’s half-birthday.  I’m glad I took that day off this year.

So there you have it…most of October in a nutshell.  Before I can even catch my breath from this month, it’ll be Thanksgiving, Christmas, and then 2015 in a flash.  I’d better stop once in a while to appreciate the things around me.  Luckily, I take photos of everything to remind me of how I’m spending my time and energy.  My memory is certainly not as good as it used to be.

I miss him.

koa signOne year ago today, we lost Koa to kidney failure. At times, it seems surreal that he’s actually gone.

DSC_2897I think about him daily and wonder what kind of trouble he and KK would be up to if he was still around.  KK loves watching videos of him and looks at the painting on our wall when she eats dinner and often says “it’s Mama and Koa”. I’m still amazed at how patient he was with her.

Running KoaI get a little choked up when I run along parts of McCovey Cove or when we drive past Fort Funston.  We sometimes talk about getting another dog.  I know we’ll never be able to replace him and will it be weird to get another shiba?

Thanks to my Brother, makakoa.org is still up and running.  He happened to renew the domain name just before his passing so we still have it for a couple more years.

Miss you, Koa Bear.

My 39th Birthday

IMG_8409Ah…another year has passed and I have one more year left in my 30s.  Luckily I had a wonderful birthday weekend of celebrations.  On Friday evening, Kumquat and I went out for Happy Hour.  It’s still so much fun to dine out with her and today was especially fun.

IMG_8427As if 2 hours at HH wasn’t enough, she also made it through a late-night dinner at a fancier-than-usual restaurant.  I had a tasty mushroom risotto with fresh uni on top and Ozumo still does their raw fish and scallops well.  Jes and I were thoroughly impressed by KK’s ability to keep it together so late and felt so lucky to have been able to enjoy an old dinner spot again.

IMG_8480On Saturday, we went out for brunch at my favorite place in SF – the Ferry Plaza.  We also walked around the city for a bit before heading home for naptime.

IMG_8490For dinner, we went to Harris’ for some prime rib and steaks. This picture doesn’t really do it justice but oh well.  It was delicious but Lawry’s is still #1 for me. IMG_8496

IMG_9729 Thanks to Jason and Jia for the yummy dinner!!

IMG_8502On Sunday morning (my actual birthday), I had lots of birthday texts, phone calls, and Facebook posts to keep me busy.  I also wished my dear brother a Happy Birthday over Facetime.IMG_8506

IMG_8511I also went out for a solo run and finished 3.9 miles in a faster-than-usual time.  I guess running with a stroller does help make you a better runner.  I felt pretty good and I think I’ve gotten stronger over the past month.

IMG_8533During the day, I took care of my usual Sunday chores and then we went shopping for tonight’s dinner.  The girls came over for hot pot and it was a long-overdue and fancier version of McWino.  There was no McDonald’s this year but there was still plenty of wine.

IMG_8544I had a really nice birthday weekend and look forward to this coming year.  I feel so blessed to have my health, my awesome family, my wonderful friends, and a job that I don’t hate.  Cheers!
