Day Two

Last night I made Kao Thom Gai and we had it for breakfast this morning. Kinda felt like a weekend except Jes had to take a bunch of conference calls for work. See, I can make myself useful when I’m not working!

Later in the morning, I had my routine prenatal visit and then had some time to kill before my lunch date with Jes. So, I walked around Union Square for almost two hours before heading down to the Ferry Plaza. This is the water feature at Justin Herman Plaza with actual water running through it! By the time I got in line for Roli Roti, my hips were killing me.

Lunch was tasty (as usual) and it was such as nice sunny day that I got some gelato for the walk home. At least, I tried to walk home but I was so uncomfortable that I ended up taking Muni instead. At the stop, I found Victor on his way home to pick up his car for a meeting. That was random.

Once I got home, I passed out on the couch for a two hour monster nap. It was totally unintentional but apparently I needed it.

Once I woke up, I tidied up the house a bit and then met up with Teresa who had brought her puppy, Bailey, over to meet Koa. She’s so darn cute but a total spaz. Koa didn’t know what to do with her. She ran circles around us and taking a walk to the park was a little crazy. When we got back to the house, she gobbled up some of Koa’s kibble, took all his toys out of the toy bin, and eventually Koa gave in and shared his tennis ball with her.

So Day Two of my Maternity Leave was pretty random but I got lots of exercise and some tasty eats. Everyone says I should enjoy this time while I can and I think I’m doing a pretty good job of it so far. Too bad my hips are so sore.

Close Call

On Friday afternoon, Dayantha and Krissy arrived in SF and we all met up for Happy Hour that evening.  After a few hours at Sens, we all went to dinner at Chaya to celebrate Jimmy’s promotion.  Thanks for dinner, J!  Afterward, we stopped at Jimmy and Jes’ building to pick up their belongings and we got to check out Jimmy’s new window office.  He’s a big boss now and had all his stuff moved into the office with a view of 1st and Howard that day.  We were so proud.

Once it was time to head home, Jimmy offered the four of us a ride back to our place.  Just around the corner from the office, we waited at a red light and happened to be next to a CHP car.  I had a bad feeling about it and my feeling was right.  As soon as we made the left turn, we were pulled over.  The car was full and all of us in the backseat weren’t buckled in since the drive to our house was only a mile away.  Jes had to roll the window down in the back and the officer asked us why were weren’t wearing our seat belts.  The officer also smelled the booze on all of us and poor Jimmy had to get out of the car for a little “testing”.  Luckily he passed but I was ready for both Jes and I to get cited for not buckling up.  Fortunately, the officer (who looked half our age) was nice enough to let us off with warnings.  This night of celebration could have turned terribly sour if Jimmy got a DUI and multiple tickets for our laziness.

Congrats on the promotion and sorry for the scare, Jimmy!  We can take a cab next time!

Chinatown Adventure

We’ve been without a car for the past week and it hasn’t been too bad so far. Our first dilemma was this weekend when Jes wanted to make some Chinese food this coming week and wanted to go to 99 Ranch. That’s pretty much impossible without a car so we decided to take the bus to Chinatown and ended up having a successful and also adventurous shopping trip yesterday.

As we browsed all the food markets, we got hungry and found a hole-in-the-wall with a bunch of old Chinese people in a line out the door. We stood in that line and picked up two tasty pork buns for only $1.10.

They were HUGE and Jes said that it tasted just like his grandma’s. He even got super nostalgic and sent a photo of it to his brother. Aw shucks.

We found a bunch of different shops filled with fresh produce and lots of raw stuff that was both fascinating and gave me the creeps at the same time. You know…stuff like buckets of chicken feet, a whole shark on ice, and a bucket o’ bullfrogs. Yum. We went home with bags of veggies, three different types of pork, spices, and fresh noodles.

Tonight, I used the noodles and made a big bowl of Bamee Hang, which is a dry noodle dish that I LOVED as a kid. It has egg noodles that get blanched in hot water, then mixed with garlic oil, crushed peanuts, cilantro, bean sprouts, green onion, and sliced BBQ pork. Oh and don’t forget the fish sauce!

Zippy Fun

This afternoon we attended a BBQ in Moraga where one of Jes’ co-workers lives.  It’s a nice spacious house with a large backyard big enough for a little zip line.  The kids had a lot of fun on it and Jimmy wanted to give it a try too.  It was the end of the afternoon so it was like a little grand finale for everyone to see.  (Click on the four arrows on the bottom right for full screen view).

Unfortunately, the rope gave way and he was on the floor in no time.

Jes managed to repair it with his skillful sailor knot tying skillz.

He even gave it a test ride and luckily it worked.  (Click on the four arrows on the bottom right for full screen view).

Field Trip

On Saturday, Jes and I went on our first baby shopping field trip to Babies R Us and Target.  Our mission was to look at Pack n Plays since it would be the only thing that we’d have for Kumquat to sleep in for the first year or so.  I had looked online but it’s hard to tell how sturdy stuff really is until you actually touch it and shake it around a bit.  🙂  So, we went to the store and got to park in the Stork Parking spaces.  Pretty funny.

We picked a model that has an attached changing station and lots of pockets and a hamper on the side for easy access.  Kumquat can sleep on the upper level until she’s old enough to sit up and potentially climb out.  Then we’ll remove the top layer and she’ll have the actual bottom part to sleep in.  It’s a pretty cool to know that we don’t have to buy a crib for our little fishbowl of a house.  Still not sure if it will fit comfortably in the bedroom but we’ll figure something out.

We also looked at car seats and strollers.  There are so many brands and styles that it was pretty annoying.  Jes attempted to unlatch one of the carriers from the base and it took a little figuring out without resorting to just throwing it on the ground to see if it’ll come apart.  After that experience, we put shopping for one of those for another day in hopes of possibly acquiring a hand-me-down from a certain someone in Las Vegas.  We shall see if it works out.

Catching Up

On Tuesday night, we had dinner at TGIFriday’s, with Huy, the Fernandos, and Agustins. It was fun to see them all together and I got a bunch of good laughs.

On Wednesday, Jes and I had lunch with Marie and the boys.  Jes had his favorite ramen and the boys gobbled up their noodles too.  Cole loved his Ninjago kit and Brandon was excited to play with his Cars.  It’s always great to see the Suminos and makes me miss the days when I would spend random afternoons with them when I lived in Irvine.
