Back in C-Town!

We’re in C-Town for the weekend!  Jes and I flew in last night and Huy was kind enough to pick us up from LAX at midnight (flight was delayed an hour). THANKS DUDE!! Afterward, we went straight to Cerritos where we met up with the Fernandos at a sports bar next to Carl’s Jr. It was a weird little dive bar playing heavy metal and packed with people who didn’t look like they were from Cerritos (if you know what I mean). Anyway, we had a good hour and a half of beer and hot wings before heading back to The Magical House. Unfortunately, the parents are out of town for the weekend. Too bad. But I still got to make a quick trip to Target and deposit some checks that I’ve been carrying around with me for weeks. There some things about suburbia that you can’t beat.

By the way, it’s a crazy 87 degrees with some humidity down here so I’m in shorts, a t-shirt, and flip-flops for the first time in months. So, THIS is what summer is like. I sorta forgot.

Experiment Update

So, Month 5 of our “We Have No Car” Experiment has just come to an end and things are going well. Commuting on public transportation, using zipcar, and just plain walking has been fine. The only inconveniences may be day trips or weekend trips that require a little more planning than just hopping in your car and driving off. However, when it comes to daily activities and local weekend activities, I don’t seem to feel the need for having my own car. So, with the money that we’ve saved on just the car payments alone (not including insurance and gas), we have plenty of money to take a nice week-long trip.

belize_map.jpgI got a week off at the end of August and we are heading to Belize! It’s located in Central America with lots of little cayes (keys) to explore. I guess this is a fitting place to visit considering it’s the pioneer of eco-tourism. All the fuel I’ve saved on not having a car will go towards my 5-hour flight each way to and from my destination. I booked our flights on American Airlines last night and I just booked one of our three hotel stays today. My co-worker just spent two weeks there in April and she got me really excited about lounging around drinking rum-spiked punch, snorkeling just outside of my hotel room, and trekking through tropical forests to find ancient Mayan ruins. It sounds awesome.

As for the experiment…it looks as though we may not be able to go carless for much longer. Starting in September, I’ll need a car in order to get to my teaching job. Sure, my teaching job is only 1-2 times per week and it’s in Oakland too but I’ll also be working 9-hour days on my non-teaching days as Daylight Saving Time also comes to an end. We’ll probably be looking for something small, fuel efficient, in the $15-20K range, and won’t be very tempting to the hoodlums in OakTown. So, if anyone has any suggestions on what we should consider, let me know. I just know that U.S. News and World Report ranked Honda Civic, Honda Fit, and Honda Civic Hybrid as #’s 1, 2, and 3, respectively. How boring.

Back on track

I’ve been going to bed kinda early this week and I’m feeling like I’m back on Pacific Standard Time. In fact, I’ve been doing rather well at work this week. Perhaps my trip to NYC was restful enough for me to feel rejuvenated at work. It’s probably a combination of coming from a course and learning applicable strategies that I can apply right away and having a 4-day work week.

It took me a while to sort through my photos from New York but here they are. They’re pretty random but I guess that’s what happens when you travel alone. Enjoy!

Hopping Time Zones

Dude, my sleeping clock is all out of whack. I jumped from PST to HST, back to PST, jumped to EST, and back to PST all in a matter of 9 days. Phew. I’m aaaall messed up.

Wandering Around

I got a taste of what it’s like to travel alone.  After class, I hopped on and off subway trains and wandered around NYC until dinnertime.  It was just me and the big buildings looking down at me.

Still alive…

Hey everyone, I’ve been in NYC since Saturday morning and I’m having a good time catching up with Holly, Roy, Jason and Jia. Oh yeah, my feeding course is pretty good too. Haha. Despite having to get up early this morning and sitting in class all day, I got the chance to do some exploring in the evening and found some pretty cool stores. Stay tuned for more details when I get the chance to organize my thoughts a bit more.

I’ve been staying at Holly and Roy’s place near Columbus Circle and we had Indian for dinner with Jason and Jia tonight. I have one more day of class tomorrow and then it’s straight to the airport for me in the evening.

Oh yeah, sorry I missed your 1st birthday bash, Katie!! Auntie Nina was thinking about you all weekend!! Hope you had a good time!
