Off to Mormonland!

We are now in Salt Lake City and before we even landed in Utah, there was a sweet announcement overhead on our Southwest flight:

We have a special request. There’s a young lady who has a test and she’s forgotten her book. If anyone has The Book of Mormon available for her to borrow, please push your call button. Thank you.

5 seconds later…*DING!* *DING!*

I had to cover my face with the newspaper to control the silent guffaw that I had to let out.

It’s time to get outta here!

We’ve got some trips comin’ up! After so many months of saving money and getting used to life in SF, we are headin’ outta here! This weekend I’ll be doing some skiing in Utah while there’s still a bit of Winter left. Then, in another few weeks, we’re going to Hawaii, baby! We couldn’t resist the super-cheap tickets to Honolulu so we’ll be going for a long 4-day weekend. I’ll have to save up my vacation days and bonus money for a longer, farther-away trip later this year.

So, in preparation for this weekend, we met a nice lady who will be coming by twice a day to walk the little pup while we’re away. It’s cheaper than boarding him and he gets to sleep in his own bed. She came over on Sunday afternoon and we took her down to his usual pee spots. Koa seemed a little unsure at first but they should be fine.

25 Years of Service

Despite a mild fever, body aches, and an annoying headache, I flew home for my mom’s retirement dinner. My mom retired on Wednesday after 25 years of service. When I got home, my mom couldn’t wait to show off her official certificate signed by the Governator himself.

It was nice to be home again even if it was for just a short time. It was great to see the family again and Katie was a doll. It’s too bad that I was too sick to hold her. Oh well, at least I had a zoom lens.

So, just like my dad did last year when he retired, they’re leaving for Thailand on Wednesday for a month-long trip. Take me with yooooooooou!

Here are photos from dinner.

We celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary this weekend by going to Monterey. We planned to stay overnight so the big question was “What will we do with Koa?” Well, Susie was nice enough to check on him so we actually got to leave him at home alone for a little over a day.

In Monterey, we got a package that included a 2-day pass to the aquarium. So, when we arrived in the afternoon, we went to the aquarium for about an hour before close and then back again on Saturday morning. The crowds are smaller at closing time and in the morning so it worked out great! I also got the chance to take some practice photos, check them on my laptop over the evening, and go back and re-take anything that didn’t quite work. Another cool thing that I discovered on my new camera was the “underwater” setting, which takes out that funny blue tint to aquarium photos. Excellent.

We had dinner at Passionfish, which was as good as I remembered it to be. I really enjoyed the crab salad and my scallops main course. The next morning, we had breakfast at Duck Club, which was a real treat. I got to watch the otters roll around in the kelp as I ate my eggs benedict. We also splurged on a room with a view and balcony, which came with binoculars for watching the otters play just outside my window/balcony. How fun!

We got back on Saturday afternoon and the house was in one piece. Nice job, dog! Thanks for taking care of Koa, Susie!!

We had a fun time in Sequoia this weekend. The weather was much more pleasant than I had anticipated. The weather forecast said it was supposed to be 100 degrees but it wasn’t. The campsite was convenient and had lots of shade. We also got to see lots of really big trees. We visited Auto Log, Tunnel Log, and the General Sherman Tree. I also learned how to play Blokus, which Ryan brought on the trip. Jes hiked 6 miles with the Bangs while I stayed behind with the Sokol-Juns for a mini-hike to some little pools in the stream nearby and played 4 games of Blokus. On Saturday afternoon, as we were touring the different tourist sites, we stopped at Auto Log and I used my little Canon digi to help prop up Michelle’s camera for a group photo. When the photos was taken, I forgot to take it back grab the camera and I didn’t realize it was missing until we were at the next site. To my dismay, it was gone by the time we drove back to the site…*sniff* Oh man, Jes was really mad at me and I was kicking myself the rest of the day. I’m still kicking myself. I filed a report at the Lost and Found but I doubt it will show up. Boo…it had some cool photos that Jes took on his 6-mile hike.

So we’re back in our condo with no furniture, no appliances, and no internet. I’m in the 4th Floor clubhouse again trying to upload some photos. This might take a while.

Oh yeah, it sprinkled today! I can’t believe it was at least 90 degrees in Fresno but in the low 60s as we drove into the SF area.

UPDATE:  Here are the photos from our camping trip.

a camping we will go

We are on our way to Sequoia for our annual camping trip with the Bangs and Sokol-Juns. It should be a hoot. I just hope it isn’t too hot out there. We will be back Sunday. Have a great weekend, everyone!
