Start of the Holidays

IMG_0212One of my favorite traditions is to go to Embarcadero Center to watch the lighting of the buildings and the fireworks.  It always occurs on the Friday before Thanksgiving.  This year, all the girls weren’t able to make it but KK and I went anyway.  At work, I hustled to get off at 4:15 (15 mins early).  Then I was able to pick up the kid from daycare, get home by 5:00, catch Muni to Embarcadero, and finish eating dinner by 6:00.  After dinner, we caught the “Disney on Ice” show at the rink just before they did the countdown and lit the buildings.

KK and I had a really good viewing spot and there were no tears from either one of us.  (Fireworks may me cry sometimes. I know, weird.)

Right after the fireworks, we walked down to the Hyatt to see them light up the atrium.  IMG_0210It was weird to be with just the kid this year and to be completely sober but it was just as special in its own way.  KK appreciated it much more than the last two years that we went.  It also snowed inside the atrium, which confused her a little bit.IMG_0233

After it was all done, we hung out for a little while longer so that Jes could meet us there after arriving back in SF from Geneva.  It was so nice to have the family back together again and a great way to kick off the holiday season.  Is Thanksgiving really this coming Thursday?!  Where is the time going?!

Once again…

…the Giants won the World Series.  We went outside to check out all the ruckus.

Fans took over the intersection of King and 3rd.  Police were out in full force and luckily nothing was damaged.

This was the view from the front of our building.IMG_9360

We later watched from the Muni tracks as they fired off fireworks and celebrated.IMG_9362 IMG_9363

This is the third time they’ve won since we moved here 7 years ago.

Lake Tahoe

IMG_6757James and Sylvia invited us to join them on their week in their Tahoe timeshare.  We stayed with them last year and the condo was the same configuration but we had a much better view this year.  We went for a long weekend (August 9-12) and had some good family time outside.

IMG_6778IMG_6783During the drive, it was clear and sunny outsdie.  When we arrived, it got increasingly gloomy and as soon as we parked and walked out to the lobby, it started to rain and it was followed by lightning and thunder.  What a fun experience!  I didn’t realize how much I had missed rain.  This drought is getting ridiculous.

IMG_6788At the lobby, we had a couple drinks while we waited for our key to be ready.  IMG_6810Once we checked in and unpacked, we spent the rest of the evening indoors watching the clouds and rain roll by and cooked dinner.  The girls got reacquainted and the grown-ups got to stay up late drinking and playing Sequence.

IMG_6828The next morning, we made breakfast and then we took the girls out to play for a bit.

IMG_6892Then it was time to pack up and head out to the beach.

IMG_6894We went to Camp Richardson where the sand was mixed in with rocks and pine needles but the water was calm and we had a nice BBQ and picnic table for lunch.  Can you see our little one siting all by herself in front of the big set of blankets?  She was THAT well-behaved at one point in the day.IMG_6885Kumquat needed a little time to warm-up to the water but by the end of the day she was bold enough to just walk out to the water on her own – NOT cool, kid.  That’s when we had to stick to her like glue.

IMG_6922Toward the late afternoon, I noticed a big gray cloud in the distance that was moving toward us as if Eeyore was headed in our direction.  The others also noticed so we quickly packed up and headed back to the condo.  We made it just in time as the rain came down pouring and everyone was scurrying for shelter.

IMG_6924For dinner, we ordered pizza and once the girls went to bed, we did some more drinking and played some more Sequence.  It was the second night in a row that I didn’t go to bed until past 1 am.

IMG_6974On Monday morning, I was packing up to go home when Jes got on a work call and came out saying that he made arrangements so that we could stay another day.  Yippee!!  Good thing I didn’t give that day back to work.

IMG_6990I’m so glad we stayed because we spent the day at Zephyr Cover (same beach as last year) and it was epic.  It was raining off and on that day so the beach was pretty empty.

IMG_7039 IMG_7025We also had James’ big canopy set-up and any time it started to pour, we sat under the canopy and enjoyed the sound of the thunder and rain.  The sand was really nice and the water was super calm that day.

IMG_7045Kumquat had the time of her life and because we had the beach to ourselves, it was easy to supervise her from farther than an arm’s length away.

IMG_7047We left in such good spirits because there’s something so fun and exciting about being out on the beach in the middle of a thunderstorm one minute and then the sun shining bright the next.  IMG_7061When the sun came out each time, we could see steam coming up from the sand as it dried.  Jes even went out to swim in the water during one of the downpours.

Here’s a video of one of the storms.

IMG_7064For dinner that evening, Jesse made steaks and we enjoyed one last night of drinking and games.

IMG_7066I have to say that it was a pretty relaxing weekend.  Kumquat somehow figured out how to keep herself entertained enough that I actually got some rest and time to myself for bits at a time.  It was like my brain got a recharge after a weekend of less incessant “Mama mama mama mamas”.  It was fun to see my little girl having so much fun and it was nice to be able to stay up late hanging out with friends for a change.  What a fun weekend!

Southern California Weekend

IMG_4640For PoPo’s funeral services, we went down to Southern California for a long weekend.  We drove down on Friday morning and went straight to the viewing at Rose Hills.  It was a long drive (as usual) but we lucked out with a smooth ride and not too much trouble from the toddler.  IMG_4634Here we are at the truck stop and the video below is our selfie video in the car.  Jes was being a papa bird taking the pits out of the cherries for the baby bird.

After the viewing, we stopped at the Magical House for a little rest and some scootering for Kumquat.

IMG_4665On Saturday morning, we all got up early to get to the funeral service. The family had put together such a nice slideshow that ran at the beginning of the service.

IMG_4667We all share stories about PoPo with the congregation and soon it was time for the burial.  IMG_4688The whole ceremony and service was really nice and we all had the closure that we needed.

Saturday afternoon was spent at lunch and then back at the Magical House to cool off.  That weekend was particularly warm and everyone needed a nap.  Brother later came over and Kumquat got to hang out with Cousin Alice and even had a tea party in the backyard with everyone.

On Sunday, we went to church and then went back to the Magical House for some more family time. It was nice to just relax and catch up with family. Auntie Jeanie also came over to tell us the rest of PoPo’s life story. She had given the eulogy at the service but had to cut it short due to time constraints. She also went outside with Kumquat for a little more scootering. This kid mastered going down curb cuts that day and kept saying “Fun! Fast!”

That afternoon, I was able to play with Alice more and she had a good time trying to be a big kid with Kumquat.
IMG_4803Here they are “watching” a YouTube video together.  So cute…

IMG_4825On Monday morning, we took our time getting up and Kumquat even had enough time to go play at the park nearby.  IMG_4847We had a smooth drive up to SF with no traffic and we also stopped at Gilroy for some outlet shopping and dinner.  So, we ended up getting home around 9pm instead of the estimated 5pm time.  Oh well.  At least it was a good weekend.

GoPro

DCIM100GOPROOn our way to the Bay Area Discovery Museum, we were talking about how fun it would be to have a GoPro for outings like these.  So, to satisfy the itch, we stopped at Sports Basement to check them out.

IMG_4452They had the model we were considering AND it was at a slight discount AND I got 15% off for being a therapist.  Woot!  Jes sat down in the store and put it together.  We charged it on the drive to the museum and when we arrived it was ready to go!

DCIM100GOPRO

Here are some of the photos we took today. Love the wide angle for family selfies.  DCIM100GOPRO We also captured video, of course.

This one I took in the car by controlling the camera with my phone.  The iPhone app is pretty cool.  The GoPro doesn’t have a viewfinder or a playback screen so using the app allows you to watch the video in real time as you record.  You can also use it to view the videos/photos you’ve taken on the device.

The best one was of Kumquat on her scooter.  Jes mounted it onto the handlebars with zip ties and we were in business!  I even gave iMovie a try and managed to put together a little something special for our first experiment.

Oahu: Day 5

Day Five: 4/27/14

IMG_3211The morning after the wedding was a slow one for everyone.  Kumquat and I even slept in until 8:30 that morning.  We had made plans with the Kwaks to meet them at the beach down the street where the water is calmer for the kids.  When we walked out to the lobby, it was pouring outside!  Luckily that didn’t last long and we were out in the sun again in just a half hour.

IMG_3305The beach was so nice and calm and we rented a big umbrella for only $10.

IMG_3229Roy was already there with Andrew and Holly and Jes met up with us later after they got up.  At one point, all 6 of us were in the water together and it was Kumquat’s first time actually floating in the ocean!

IMG_3230

What a fun morning!  Too bad Roy had to catch a flight back that afternoon.

IMG_3244

After a morning at the beach, we parted ways and Jes and I headed to Moana Surfrider for some drinks at the beach bar.  It’s one of our favorite places to hang out, drink, and enjoy the view.  We may not be staying there this time around but there’s no reason we should stay away from the bar!  Kumquat took a fat 2.5-hour nap in the stroller!

IMG_3270When she woke up, we shared some Bubbies mochi ice cream. I also managed to drink a total of 4 mai tais that afternoon.  Phew!

IMG_3305

Before dinner, we headed back to our hotel and played at the beach and the pool again.IMG_3316

After washing up, we watched the sun go down over Waikiki and it was beautiful.

IMG_3321

Take a look at this view from the infinity pool!IMG_3320

We also lounged around as we waiting for Dayantha and Krissy.

IMG_3322

Dinner was at Tokkuri-tei.  We had quite a feast! IMG_3324 In addition to the beer and sake, we had skewers of meat, rolls of stuff, raw this and that, and lots of other goodies.
