It’s been 17 days since my surgery and I went back to work today. It was a gloomy morning, which made going to work a little easier knowing it wasn’t going to be as sunny and gorgeous outside as it has been these past two weeks.

On Monday, I tried to make the most of my last day off. Mirian came in the morning to keep Kumquat occupied while I purged my closet, went to the bank, did some grocery shopping, had a nice solo lunch with a magazine, and went to see the surgeon for my post-op follow-up appointment.

There’s something so satisfying about holding an actual magazine in my hand. I have all the digital copies of Sunset on my Kindle but somehow I still enjoy flipping through real pages.

By the way, at my post-op appointment, the doctor showed me what he cut out of my body. He said that there were little lumps of fat that were poking through the hole in my abdominal wall, which was causing the sharp pain and a funny lump at the top of my belly button. When he went in, he cut them out and snapped a photo of it for his report. He also emailed me the photo! What a cool doctor! I’ll spare you all the lovely photo of my fat blobs but let me know if you want to see and I’ll show it to you. I thought it was a fun little souvenir from my first open surgery. 😉 He also said that the hole was small enough that he was able to just suture it back instead of placing a mesh patch. Yay! No foreign object in my body!!

So, I’m back to work with a 30-lb lifting restriction for the next two weeks. It was nice to see everyone again but the work was just “meh”. Oh I wish I could have had a few more weeks off…

Lunching with the Ladies

Since I was off this week, Ranee off was today, and Stephanie is still on maternity leave, we all met up in Walnut Creek after I took Kumquat to the dentist. We had lunch at Tender Greens in preparation for our tasty treat at CREAM, which just opened last month.

Vivian was a good little baby and slept long enough for Stephanie to have lunch.

Unfortunately, she woke up as soon as she got her ice cream sammich. Here’s a photo of mine. Just like last time at the Berkeley store, I got double chocolate chip cookies with coffee ice cream.

Sophie wanted a taste of Ranee’s sammich. I don’t blame her. They’re delicious.

I wish I had more days off like this.

Oh and I didn’t realize this until Dr. Chang pointed it out at the dental visit but Kumquat and I were matching today.

Oakland

I had the day off today to take care of my pre-op paperwork and to get my medical clearance and blood work done with my doc. For lunch, I picked up a pumpkin croquette with Japanese curry from the lunch truck down the street from the doctor’s office.

I was done by the afternoon so I let Mirian go home early and Kumquat and I headed out to Oakland before the Friday evening commute. It was so nice and warm outside in the East Bay!

To kill some time, we stopped at my work. It worked out well since I had to pick up a few things and Kumquat needed to eat.

She also had a really good time playing in the office and everyone was happy to see her. Here she is messing with Teresa’s desk.

Afterward, we walked over to Marc 49 for Happy Hour. Stephanie was brave enough to come out tonight so we got to see Vivian and Nathan too!

Kumquat was surprisingly tolerant of the cramped corner and just sat with us. She snacked, played with her toys, sat on different people’s laps, and just hung out like a Happy Hour pro.

I was so proud of her.

Teresa and Aaron also made it tonight and I got her their first Baby Bump photo. I’m amazed at how far Aaron can pooch out his belly! He looked more preggo than T!

Ah…good times…

Crappy Traffic

Yesterday I got off at 3 pm so that Mirian could go home to Karla who was sick with a fever. Because of a big rig fire that occurred earlier that morning (5 am), there was a terrible back-up even as I was trying to get home in the afternoon. It took me 45 minutes to drive 9 miles! Thank goodness there wasn’t a BART strike today.

Look at how different it was today!

Berkeley

This morning I got a text from Mirian saying that Karla had a rash and a fever. Initially, Jes thought he could stay home with Kumquat but the hesitation in his voice made me think it wasn’t going to work out. So, I called in sick and felt so bad for having to canceling my appointments today but I just had to do it. Once everything was settled, I texted Steph to see if she was free for the day. We met up at the Berkeley campus area for lunch and a special treat. It was cool being in that area again after all these years. I spent a summer there and numerous days and nights visiting everyone there on the weekends.

I took a photo of Kumquat in front of the Golden Bear and sent it to Dayantha just for good times’ sake.

After lunch, we stopped at CREAM for ice cream sandwiches. Kumquat wanted a bite but I didn’t give her any. She’ll have to wait until she’s a bit older. It’s like Diddy Riese and a sandwich was only $2! I got double chocolate chip cookies with coffee ice cream in between. Yum.
